FNP preceptor tips / around Los Angeles

Published

HI,

I am a Chamberlain University FNP student in need of preceptor(s) for 5 classes (March – Dec. 2021). I would need a family practice/internal medicine setting. I am looking to see if anyone knows any doctors/NPs that can help.

I am very dedicated and hard-working. I have been an RN for 11 years but in an acute care hospital setting, I would need some guidance to put my knowledge of family medicine into practice.

I have tried to the personal network, primary clinic, reach out to doctors (including cold calling many clinics), but nothing seems to work. I know many of you may be facing similar struggles, it's just very hard to focus on studying and looking for a preceptor at the same time. Chances are I will have to delay my courses.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Get in touch with some of the general hospitalists at your facility. Chances are that many of them have their own office and see patients in primary care/family practice setting. I'm currently following a few physicians because of that and I know a few more hospitalist at my work that also do primary care.

How about any of your coworkers? I found two preceptors through two RNs who were finishing up NP school when I was in school. And what about your school? Do they provide a list of preceptors?

I know that finding a preceptor is hard. I was living in Los Angeles when I was in NP school and it was rough! There is a lot of competition and then this whole coronavirus thing definitely does not make things easier!

My coworkers, some when to NP school, did share some potential preceptors but none was accepting any more students. My school don't provide list of preceptors due to confidentiality/privacy reasons. The school will provide preceptor matching as a last resort but it can range 100miles from my residency. It has just been really hard calling so many places everyday.

I am sorry to hear about this difficulty, @Simon. I can't believe your school won't list the preceptors! We were given a list of preceptors, that at least gave us hope! LOL
