I was just accepted to a nursing program (yay!) and am totally excited to start in January. My ultimate goal is to work as a nurse practitioner, but I wanted some advice from experienced nurses first. I'm currently working as an MA in a private practice family medicine office. I haven't even stepped foot in a hospital yet, but I feel like I wouldn't want to go back to a private practice office for family medicine. I wanted to get my FNP because I feel like it would offer me the most opportunity, but do you think I would be able to take that with me in a hospital setting?
Thanks!

You can be an FNP in a hospital setting, usually rounding/working with the hospitalist/internal med team if you are employed by a hospital. Otherwise, you could join a practice that allows you to round on patients in the hospital primarily for the doctors instead of doing appointments in the office. I personally work in the hospital as an RN and am looking forward to finishing my FNP program so I can work in an office :).
Thanks for your response! I never thought of being employed by a practice and rounding for the doctors. That's exactly why I wanted to post my question. I know there are so many things that I'm not yet aware of, and knew I'd get good advice from this site!
Any other suggestions out there?

I worked with 2 FNPs who worked only in the hospital in our Cardiothoracic unit seeing patients post open heart & they were awesome & actually encouraged me to become a FNP instead of an Adult NP...as a matter of fact 1 of them also works per Diem in the ER.
Awesome! Thanks for all these ideas!
