Hello, I am looking to leave the hospital/direct patient care after 12 years of experience as I feel like I'm in need of learning a new aspect of nursing. I have applied for a screener for a LTC system here and although I've dealt with many in my past working on the floors I'm still curious about what a day to day experience would be like. I researched it and I get what they do but I'm worried it's more of a sales position, please let me know if I'm wrong and if anyone is experienced in this job I would appreciate your input. FYI here is my hx 3 years Step down Telemetry Floor 1 years Step down ICU 3 years Open Heart Unit(floated) to Trauma, Burn, CCU and MICU 3 years of Cath Lab 4 years of case management( I worked per diem in critical care will doing this) 1 year in GI unit(current job now) 3 -4 years (per diem in Ltc supervision) These May seem confusing but I've always held 2 jobs at a time except in the last 3 years I've only been doing hospital nursing no pet diem job. Again thanks for any input!

I am a RN who graduated from Trocaire in 2004 and found a job quick. My gripe with them was the expensive tuition & less than sensitive instructors.

I am in New York states & I know plenty of NPs who only work as RNs because they didn't enjoy being a NP. As a matter of fact I work with one in the Cath lab

I am currently a RN who works in home care & we see about 5-6 pts a day & sometimes that can be crazy. So I'm wondering how are you going to see 10-12 pts a day along with paperwork. I understand both of our roles are different but to me in this specialty that seems like a huge load. So be careful.

I mean I'm just dropping to part time status!! I was full time & used to pick up mega call. So cutting that out too lol

Thanks BeeGeeRN!!! Our schedule is about the same except we work 13hrs but the call schedule is the same as yours!!! I just started part time so maybe it is doable :)

I currently work days 13hr with on call in the Cath lab but plan on working going to part time nights when I start my FNP program next year. Did you find it impossible to study when you worked nights.

Hello everyone! I currently work 13hr shifts as RN in a CathLab & attend school for my BSN. I will be starting the FNP program next year & am considering quitting my job as the hours & on call tire me out & the stress is becoming too much & interfering with my studies. I'm considering going back to agency work per Diem or contractual but I know most of the work would be night shift. I'm hoping there are people out there working night shift & going to school on this forum so I'm wondering if you can give me feedback as to how you manage this shift & your studies. Do you wish you were on days? Do u find it feasible for studies & clinicals? FYI I will probably only work 2 nights a week (8 or 12 hrs) per Diem or 13 week assignments(12hr shifts 3 nights a week) at a time if contractual. Thank you for any information or advice.

Well said!!! Nurses who speak this way do not understand the true concept of NURSING!!! CNA=Certified Nursing Assistant which means they are there to ASSIST you with YOUR Job...I always say being a CNA should be a prerequisite to becoming a Nurse just for people like this.

I live in Buffalo & you don't have to have peds experience to get into the FNP programs.

When I worked in CTICU we had a NP who would round with the surgeon & also harvest veins during CABG & he was trained by the PA & MD so surgery can be an option I believe it is up to the MD....& when I worked at a Level 1 Trauma center the Neurosurgeon had a FNP that did rounds & saw clinic patients so its def possible @ least here in New York State.

I worked with 2 FNPs who worked only in the hospital in our Cardiothoracic unit seeing patients post open heart & they were awesome & actually encouraged me to become a FNP instead of an Adult NP...as a matter of fact 1 of them also works per Diem in the ER.

Anyone know if UB still offers the RN to BSN I looked on their website & it's so confusing. I have also emailed the school but of course with the holiday weekend no response yet. Thanks for any help.

Hi RN bean. I am a RN also & am looking for a Nys online program also for the same reason as you are. I am looking to apply to Delphi for the spring semester, wondering how long the program? Would also be interested in feedback regarding your question as well.
