I have been an ED nurse for awhile and recently started my first NP job in the ED. I don't have great websites, but I did find some really helpful books on the ACEP website. ACLS and PALS is also available these days online.

I went to the AANP conference this past summer and they had some good hands on learning sessions such as chest tubes, central lines, arthrocentesis, ect.

I love working in the ED and hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I just started in the ER too as an FNP- Will be going to that conference in june- was it good?

I went to alot of acute care classes at the AANP conference last year also and really enjoyed them. I am going this year also and am going to take the two day critical care course. Plus you get lots of ce at one place.

I'm going to take that class too- See you there! I am looking forward to the conference. I went last year and focused on primary care but I see there are alot of acute care sessions as well.

I also attended AANP last year. I found it quite heavily focused on Primary Care however they are trying to increase acute care content. I will be there this year as I have a poster presentation.

If you are looking for a conference with lots of acute care content I suggest AACN's National Teaching Institute conference, this year in New Orleans in May. It has many streams for RN's and managers but has a whole 'Advanced Practice' stream that is geared towards ACNP's. Would be very appropriate for and ER NP who is looking for in depth acute care info! I will also be attending that one and am presenting a concurrent session.

Question folks, do if an NP wants to work ER do they normally do the FNP route or Acute NP?

I wish to continue on my Master's and like both Family Practice and ER, that's why I'm asking. Thanks.

I did FNP because it may take you awhile to find an Er job and in the meantime you can work anywhere. If you know you will already start in the ER then I would ACNP but it will limit what you will be able to do as far as changing jobs and working in different areas if you ever want to change.

I agree- If you are set on ER and have a position waiting than do the acute care or ER NP program (I guess only Houston and Loyola). But the FNP is very versatile and perhaps you could do some clinical rotations in the ER anyway since that is your area of interest.

I work with an NP who has been an ER nurse for 20 years but it is her first NP job and she is really struggling (but holding her own) without having the acute care NP background or any experience.

I think the FNP will serve you well.

There is an Emergency NP program in Houston, TX at The University of Texas, Houston Health Science Center. It was started by Frank Cole, PhD, RN, CEN, CS, FNP, FAAN, FAANP,Professor, Divison Head: Emergency Care

Department of Acute & Continuing Care, Emergency Care Division The program started in 1994. There were 3 or 4 students in that first class, now there is a waiting list. Dr. Cole has also created a Resource Directory of Nurse Practitioners who provide emergency care and has created a newsletter for nurse practitioners in emergency care. I have been told that most mid-level ER positions require that you be able to serve the entire patient population (including peds) and that the typical ACNP program does not provide the required ped component. The person that informed me of this policy is a recruiter for PA/NPs for ER positions in the southeast. She suggested that I pursue the FNP and combine that with RN experience in acute care. Does anyone have any comments regarding this advice?

I think that is probably good advice. I can't speak for ACNP programs, but I do think the ERNP programs listed above would be phenomenal. My FNP combined with acute care RN experience has served me well. I think getting some FNP experience in an urgent care prior to the ED works well too. You do see a lot of kids in most small town er's that aren't specialized. I probably see half and half.
