FNP or acute care NP

Published

I was accepted to a good school for their MSN program. I can choose either FNP or acute care adult/gero NP. I can also choose to do both. Initially I would like to continue to work in the hospital, possibly even in an ICU setting (my background is cardio and emergency). I like the idea of having the flexibility to work outpatient or even in a clinic. What is everyone's thoughts? Should I do both?

What would you consider "clinic"? Plenty of ACNP's I know never work in a primary care clinic but have a combination of hospital + clinic or exclusively clinic in specialty practices in Cardiology, Pulmonary, Transplant, or Surgery.

Ultimately you have to make the decision, Russianbear. I know two NPs at work who were in primary care programs but are now working in acute care. I also know of an NP (six degrees of separation) who was working in acute care and has transitioned to primary care. It seems that whatever you choose, you won't be stuck in it.
