Can an FNP (Family Nurse Practitioner) get certified to work in Acute Care? What is that process like?

If you mean certified as in taking the certification exam, you would need to go to school to get training in acute care. There are some schools that now have post-grad certificates for acute care NP. Some hospitals hire FNPs to work in the hospital, but this is something that may be changing soon due to the consensus model.

You go back to school and a post-masters cert. You can't just take the exam.

My school requires a minimum of 1 year RN experience in the ICU before you can even apply for the ACNP program. Best to check with your school, you may also need ICU experience before being accepted.
