UM Accelerated BSN Program May 2011

U.S.A. Florida

hi everybody! ive kinda been on and off stalking this forum for a little over a year and finally decided to join!:lol2:

heres my story...i applied into the may 2011 accelerated bsn program for UM, university of miami. i sent my application in dec 1 and transcripts dec 2nd. because i was currently enrolled in classes and because i took ONE college class in high school, my app was not considered for early decision even tho i submitted on the deadline date because all of my transcripts weren't in (a geology class which showed up on my bachelors transcripts and 6 credits worth of grad school). anyway, i have a BS from stony brook university in ny and have taken all of the nursing pre reqs except for chem, which i am currently enrolled in and UM is aware (she had me show her proof of enrollment to have my application stay in consideration). i have a 4.0 in the nursing pre reqs and a 3.52 on my bachelors (graduated cum laude)

the academic advisor told me that i wont hear back until march, but when reading through old discussions it looks like people received acceptance letters at all different types...how competitive is it to get in? do you think not having taken chemistry before would disqualify me? i am sooo nervous. i really want to get into this program and have heard soo many great things about UM.

i know alot of other schools have crazy wait lists, and some only accept the bare minimum amount of students. so im just wondering how many people are in the class and how competitive it really is. i also hope more than ANYTHING that i get in. what do you guys think?

FYI: I applied in December for the fall start date, received phone calls in early March because the dean at the school I was attending (FAU) had not faxed in a form yet. I logged in and saw my status in mid-march.

see my previous response. They definitely won't let you know until the application period is closed so start checking about a week after that.

the weird thing is is that the regular admissions app deadline for the summer program is march 1st, the same as for the fall program. there are quite a few people who have received admissions decisions already, but im not sure if they were all early decision. if they were, that would explain it. thanks for posting about your experience!

It was the same last year as well. They literally give you four weeks to get everything together so I would start getting my shots and everything up to date if you don't have them done already.

I sent my application in early because I wanted to apply for the scholarship. I was quite upset to receive my acceptance package two weeks after the scholarship application deadline had passed. I complained, but all they could offer me was to defer admission. So I deferred and applied to BC and FAU as well, since they're cheaper.

wow that sounds like a great way to start...lol...do they have the info for what we need to start (physical, background, etc) online?

im still curious as to how competitive it really is. i was hoping to hear from them within a few weeks so i could plan on either continuing to apply to schools or just focus on them..guess that means im gonna need to get some more applications in if i want to start in 2011!

Well you can always apply to Barry again for next Spring. That was my option if I cant pay UM, work and save and start Barry JAN 2012. If you are willing to be in school alot longer! Nova has a traditional program that starts Fall and Spring and lasts 27 months. If you are talking about coming up north , the only schools whose deadlines are not Jan 15 are USF and UF. USF does not require Teas or HESI, just an application to the school, then after you are accepted you may apply to the program itself on SOAR. The only dilemma I am facing with them is that I applied fron August 2010 and still haven't been accepted to the school. They say my transcipts need to be complete with my bachelors degree awarded, which will be on April 30, so I have to apply for Fall 2011. The good thing is their deadline to turn in the nursing application for fall is June 15. P.S you also can't turn in an app while completing a pre req so your in my boat and would apply to the school but cant apply to nursing till after spring. Theyre admission is more point based and they take into consideration health care experience. and a writing sample as well as pre req grades on the first attempt. Next is my current alma mater, UF. They're deadline is March 1. You turn in a post baccalaureate application to the office of admissions with your $30.00 then you can apply on their website to the Accelerated BSN program. Both these programs do run Aug2011- Dec 2012 just so you are aware. UF as well does not require teas or hesi so i honestly dont think you need to take them at this stage. They instead ask that you take the GRE and get 500 minimum on math and verbal.( 1000 combined).. Hope this helps =)

Grace,

You did even more research than I did!!! Lol I am definitely keeping all of those schools in consideration only one I think I forgot was UF and if I practically was accepted to Barry now I'm sure it would be the same in Jan since I will be way done with Chem. That's the only pre-req I'm missin idk why I didn't take it sooner!

LOL yeah i've been researching nursing schools like crazy for the past year just dying to apply, and now I just know too much for no reason lol. And I'm sure Barry would take you the second time if they already accepted you. I hear Nova is awesome, they teach you so well :) But I wanna be in and out, so UM, FAU,Barry,USF,UF are my only options. UM is my first choice though, I just need them to show me my award package by march so I know what I need to do, possibly take out loans and return them if I get the scholarship. I just want to be prepared because I hear their financial aid dept will screw you over and not give a damn. I really hope you get to go to UM though, it sounds like your first choice as well :jester:

lol you can never know enough, trust me! i have been looking into applying into nursing school for awhile now, i was going to do the asn route due to their only being one college that is local to me and that is all they offer. needless to say the program is extremely competitive...i had 166/220 points and was still missing 3 pre-req classes and the lowest they went down to for that class was 171/220. i wanted to KICK myself, because all i would have needed was one class to ensure being accepted! but i thought about it and with already having a bachelors and the competitiveness of the job market a bsn is quicker and better...i heard nova was great as well i spoke to them already but i cant do another 27 months of school. i need the quickest, especially if i want to become an arnp before it becomes a doctorate degree. yeah we pretty much have the same options and same outlook. UM is definitely my first choice (at first due to location but after research on the facility due to their program!) and i really do hope we BOTH get in and soon so we can figure this out. otherwise we may catch each other at barry in jan 2012. haha;)

I am applying to FAU as well. My only options are U. of Miami and FAU. I have heard that FAU is so competetive. I have a MBA from FAU and my gpa is 3.88; however, I scored 76 in the vocabulary part for the HESI exam (they require at least 80% in each part). My average is 88.7%. 98% in math, 93% in reading and 88% in grammar. I hope they still consider my application. let's see what happens. I will keep you posted.

FAU is VERY competitive due to such a small amount of seats in the program. the lowest gpa i have heard they accept is 3.55, but you are very competitive there, and in the 90th percentile for HESI. so you are almost there overall. your GPA may make up for it, but you are competitive just they do not have a lot of opportunity. when you speak to the actual nursing department (i have several times) they pretty much warn you every nursing program they offer is getting harder to get into every semester..good luck though

Yunas,

As I always say prayer works wonders so just keep praying about it and i'm sure it will work out for the best. I always think "Hey, somewhere's bound to take me" lol!. Keep checking my UM and the mail . I never asked you, did you list any health care experience on your application? and who wrote your letter(s) of recommendation for you( just titles no name)??
