Hey Everyone!

I made this forum for people that are applying to Santa Fe College ASN Program.

It would be nice if we can all share our experience and share our some of our informations during the process!!

I have heard the same thing about Santa Fe's program and that's where I have been taking the prerequisite science courses that I did not take for my first degrees. I have enjoyed the classes there. I know a daughter of the new nurse hiring manager at UF Health and she also told me that he prefers Santa Fe trained nurses. I believe that the preference is likely true because ASN programs tend to focus more on clinical work and bedside care skills.

Our situations are so similar it is crazy. I am assuming that you do not or have not felt that your current career path is fulfilling/rewarding. I began to feel depressed about a year into my profession and I was not happy with my prospects. I had considered nursing when I was younger, but I was passionate about agricultural education and felt that I needed to follow that passion. I decided that I do not want to look back on life and have any regrets about not trying something, so I decided to start this journey.

I met my boyfriend of nearly 5 years during my senior year at UF. He has an elderly father and a business here, so I am also rooted here. I definitely agree about avoiding student loans. Sadly, I am already in quite a bit of student loan debt from my previous degrees and my boyfriend will not be able to take on all of the bills while I am in school. So, I am afraid that more student loans is inevitable for me. However, working in public health will qualify for federal loan forgiveness after 10 years. I believe that working at North Florida Regional would not qualify for loan forgiveness because it is a private hospital, but working at UF Health does qualify because it is public. I work at UF now and would qualify for loan forgiveness in my current position because UF is considered state/public.

My hopes are high for both of us to start this new path. If you have not already read this All Nurses post comparing ASNs and BSNs, you might find it interesting. I found it interesting and it gave me a boost of confidence that the ASN is my top choice. This track might cost me a bit more time in school, but I believe that the ASN give me the experience I want.

Yes, I also thought we were coming from very similar situations. My sister is a local nurse. She's 16 years older than me. She only recently received her BSN through an online program and qualifies for loan forgiveness as she works as a nurse in a public school. I think that's a fantastic option!

I did go to a Health Sciences tour that the advisor gave in the beginning September and he did say that they are taking 80 students in the nursing program. I am not sure if that was an "average" number but that is what I was informed.

WOW! That's awesome! I wonder if them taking 80 students is in anticipation for the demand that will be created by the UF Health expansion.

I really wanted to go to that event, but I ended up getting really sick and had to miss class and work for the next few days. I hope it was helpful and informative.

Your post are every helpful thank you much. I do wonder if you guys know the competition for the nursing program at UF like how hard is it to get into compared to the nursing program at santa fe? Santa fe is competitive i think they said about 150 people and they take about 80 to 60 people so i am just wondering how UF is?

Hi Jtelon28,

I'm glad the posts have helped you.

I think that the UF programs are also very competitive. Which UF program would you be considering the ABSN (requires that you have a bachelor's degree or higher in another field), or the traditional program? UF does not offer an ASN program, so I believe that their traditional program requires that you get accepted to UF for your undergrad or you would need to transfer after completing your gen ed requirements at Santa Fe or another school. From what I know, the traditional BSN is very competitive. I have heard of people who have to graduate with their BS in biology, nutrition, etc. and then they apply for the ABSN because they could not get into the traditional program after completing their gen ed requirements at UF. Most people think that after you get into UF that you can major in whatever you want, but that is not the case if you apply indicating one major and decide that you want to change your major after getting admitted. If you want to change your major at UF that means that the department you want to enter has to be satisfied with your academic performance.

I read somewhere that they typically receive over 300 applications for the ABSN and accept less than 100, but I don't know how true that is. From reading the UF ABSN Hopefuls forum, it seems like they might give preference to people who graduated from UF with their undergrad.

If you do not already have your bachelor's degree, I would strongly suggest that you complete your prerequisites, possibly complete another short medical program that will give you extra points and allow you to work while trying to get into the ASN program, or possibly complete you associate's degree, then enter the ASN program. After completing your ASN and getting hired, many employers will pay for further education expenses. There is also a nursing program in Lake City and Ocala, if you are trying to stay in this area.

I have my AA in nursing I got it in May from Santa Fe at the moment I am taking A&P 2 that's the only prerequisite I am missing if I applied to UF I would be applying to the traditional program I also have my CNA

That's awesome! I'm taking A&P 2 right now too. Are you taking it with Ezekiel?

I am also taking A&P II as well! Not with Ezekiel though :(

Just an quick update. I talked to someone in the counseling office and she said they are going to start sending out emails next week! YIKES

Darn! Ezekiel is AMAZING!!! and it would have been cool if we were coincidentally in the same class.

Wow! Thanks for that update. I was shocked when they said they would release decisions by mid October. That is very fast turn around. I wonder if that is a possible indication that they did not have that many applicants?

I'm ready to find out either way so that I can start preparing for where I will be in January. The grant I work under ends at the end of Dec., which is perfect if I get in, but I will be looking for a job if I don't.

Hopefully thats what it means! I can tell it is going to be a LONG week waiting for the results.

Hopefully we all are given a seat! I'm so nervous and excited at the same time!!!

Me too! My fingers are crossed for all of us. :nailbiting:
