Nursing Students School Programs

Just a personal opinion. The school is subpar. High tuition, which would be ok if it was an above average education, but prior to starting clinicals they would teach skills such as NG tube placement or Foley placement by using youtube videos which the students NOT THE INSTRUCTOR would select; my personal opinion is a student nurse should practice in demo lab settings first a skill rather than waiting for a day of clinicals using the patient as a first time experience. Many of the policies would change on a weekly basis which would threaten to delay students graduation dates. Many students would complain of this, since the school would randomly put in new policies into place that were not mentioned prior. Many students mentioned having missing deposits. Many students would mention documents provided missing such as entrance acceptance letters, financial documents etc.

The instructor would say several errors which lacked the student in being confident in the material being taught. Such as NG tube placement & PH testing not being of importance. The instructor would also mention on a test question that mentioned one the primary treatments of Gonorrhea NOT being Penicillin, the instructor mentioned that not even tetracycline and rocephin were main treatments either. Discrepancies as this really did not sit well with me and I had to voluntarily leave the program because I did not feel for what they were charging it was a quality education.

The school also will not let you sit down for your boards unless you fully pay off your full balance tuition. They will suggest financial loan companies, but hopefully that won't be a ball and chain curse to you the rest of your life. Furthermore they say there credits will transfer to Universities, but when I spoke with FIU in Miami and asked if credits would be transferred over, many different advisors, including a chairperson, they would say " Who? no we have not accepted students from the school" but they would accept programs like Mercy Hospital and Excelsior.

Lets see what happens maybe there first graduating class will pass there board exams. That would be a plus if they have a high passing rate, however I don't think i'd feel comfortable with a nurse from this school touching me based on YOUTUBE videos. It's also an accelerated program, and they try covering about 20 chapters in 2 weeks, SORRY don't touch me if you did sparknotes, and if you did sparknotes I hope you had excellent demo labs combined with excellent clinicals.

I would not recommend this school based on the cost and the quality. Maybe others had a different experience; hey if you passed your boards and found a decent job, hats off to you; I desire everyone a world of success. Perhaps this school will get its act together and be in several years a school very successful, but as for me, I did not want to be the guinea pig lol.

I know someone who was thinking about going to this school. I knew something was off about it. Where do you plan on going next?

Hi Pookyp, because I was offered a good job in nursing I had to go with Excelsior. Even though it is a self paced program, If you have an LPN the program can be done in as little as 6months if your aggressive with it. The exams are conducted at a Pearson testing center so you are legit as far as what you know and not cheating as some might assume. Also since my goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner I spoke with Florida International University and they said they have accepted several students from Excelsior College. I asked them if they have accepted students from Florida Academy of Nursing and they simply replied " Who ?", I know they are a new school but I still want to make sure where I attend paves me a road where I can continue to grow. I also love the way payments are set up with excelsior. Low monthly payments of $150, that to me is great and on top of that say you finish your RN in 6 months, you can still sit down for your boards if you have not paid the full loan, that's $900 you paid to get your RN license, you can then pay back the full loan which comes out to about $6,500 - $7,000. Compared to other nursing programs that's great and when your making your RN salary you will be able to pay that off relatively quickly. Mercy Hospital and Miami Dade college are two other great programs that are also cost efficient.Florida Academy of Nursing is about $20,000 and on top of that they will not allow you to sit and take your boards if you have not paid them the full loan.

I wouldn't recommend Florida Academy of Nursing to anyone. I know one person, an LPN, who failed out of 3 RN programs, and now she's going to FAN. Somehow she's passing. I worked with her as an LPN, and she's NOT the sharpest tool in the shed. I remember one day I mentioned "popliteal area" and she asked, "What's that?" I'll be really surprised if she passes the NCLEX. FAN apparently assumes all it has to do is make the Kaplan review mandatory and all students will pass the NCLEX. Time will tell.

This is school is giving me a horrible experience. They never keep thier word. The rules are made up sometimes and there is quite a lot of favortism there. You must be sure the teacher or school admins like you in order for them assist you the way they should. One minute they will tell you that the schools schedule begins this date and than it changes. Than the teachers pass whom they wish to pass and fail the ones that they do not see eye to eye with. If you are paying your tuition than the school should definately put thier books, employess and everything else in order.
