Hi,
I have a questions about state of florida. I will be attending a RN BSN program in a different state and wanted to keep my options open. A while back I heard that if you are a out of state nurse and move to FL after you finish a RN BSN program that the state will pay off your student loans. If you agree to work X amount of years in the state of FL. I am just wondering if there is any truth about this.

It is true. You have to go to myflorida.com and put in nurse loan forgiveness plan. You do have to work in florida, but in designated areas that they allow you to work. Some areas include certain clinics and a couple hospitals. There is a list of all approved places.
P.S.- I found the website!! Hope it helps.

They won't "pay off your loans". It's $4,000 per year which is no chump change and definately worth it.
It would be nice if all you had to do was move to Florida, work anywhere and have all your loans paid off. Unfortunately while that would solve the nursing shortage, the state couldn't afford it.
As the person above states, it's not just working in the state for Florida, it's working at areas they've designated as areas of critical need. These tend to be not-for-profits, learning facilities, and various not-for-profit clinics.
I got my RN to BSN and happened to already be working at one of the designated facilities and applied for loan forgiveness. I have to work the entire calender year at this facility, make payments on my loan, and at the end of the year they pay my lender $4,000. So that's $4,000 knocked off the balance which is going to help tremendously. If I stay at the facility another year, continue to make payments on my loan without default, they will pay another $4,000.00 which at that time will pay off the balance.
First step probably would be to apply for a job at one of those facilities. Start work and then start the loan forgivenmess process.
Good luck!

If I take a home equity loan out to pay for my nursing education will this be considered a loan that they will pay towards or does it have to be a "student" loan?
Good question because the website says " Only the outstanding principal balance of those loans incurred from state or federal programs or commercial lending institutions, for your nursing education, which you are personally responsible for, are eligible."
Probably best to ask them directly.
