Hi I was recently accepted to UM and MDC for Generic Nursing Fall 2010, however due to the current situation at my house, I may need to go to the closest college near my home, being FIU. I have a few credits to finish, including those 2 pre-reqs FIU asks for. I am SO bummed out because I was looking forward to Nursing school this year and now I have to wait for fall 2011--but that's life, lol.
So my questions are:
Since I have a year before starting the program(assuming I get accepted), I plan on working a little to help the financial situation at my house plus be able to pay for these extra expenses I am sure will come about.
I am so nervous although I have gotten accepted to two other competitive schools. I was confident about getting accepted in those but I am having waves of uncertainty about this choice. I am totally lacking in confidence this time because I didn't have to take any exams for either schools. My GPA(right now) is 4.0, but after this awful algebra class I am taking now, I am expecting it to go a little lower, which is my biggest fear. I've heard FIU is like the most competitive of all nursing schools.
Well I appreciate any comments, opinions:twocents:, and most of all, encouragement. I am making this choice to help my family and I just feel uneasy and unsure all over again.

Hi,
Sorry about the situation that caused you to declined your hard earned entrance into those nursing schools! My question is, why leave UM for FIU? UM is not at all much farther from FIU, or was it a financial problem? As far as FIU, i know that it's really competitive, the hesi is easy I've heard and you need to have a 3.0 to even be considered, but I'm going for UM How competitive is that?
:-) Thanks for replying hopefulUS. I am leaving UM for FIU because of $$$ for sure. I am literally walking distance from FIU whereas Coral Gables--ugh so much traffic lol. But yes the UM tuition gives me panic attacks just thinking about it, hehehe. I would have gotten a loan but I have a tender conscience about that.
Any who, UM is a great school and I encourage anyone to apply if they are willing to pay/get loans/get scholarships. UM didn't seem to be so competitive as I thought it would be, though. I had to write an essay because when I applied months ago I hadn't finished my AA yet. I think they liked it because there was nothing about my application that was interesting other than my GPA. I didn't have any outstanding volunteer hours or work experience. It was a sheeeeer miracle.
UM's nursing staff was so helpful. They are suuuuch nice, professional individuals. I would have loved to be a part of it, but everything happens for a reason. :-) Good luck, let me know if you get accepted!!!!!!!!! My classmate and I both wailed when we got accepted, ROFL. :)
Oh I totally understand the financial problems >.
Thank you for your encouraging words!!! :) Hahah gotta love those refunds... I seriously wouldn't be able to pay extra stuff without it. Being broke stinks. But anyway, yea totally let me know if you apply to FIU too, it would be great!!! :-D
Hahaha that's one thing I would miss out on at UM (REFUNDS ) But yea I will definitely apply to FIU, I'm at FIU already doing the nursing pre-reqs. I hope I can make the cut ! If you have any questions about FIU send me a message :) Oh one thing I can tell you right off the bat, is that you will have to take a class at FIU that is mandatory for the nursing program. It's a introduction to nursing course and it's only offered at FIU, so you should go to FIU and sign up for that class before applying.
Mabel
Thanks, Mabel! Yeah I hope we both make the cut. We just gotta do our thing and wait expectantly, lol. Aw yeah, I have to finish a few more classes here at MDC and then I will be able to take that class. Have you taken it yet? Is it hard? Thanks again!
Marggie
Hi Marggie,
Nope it's a very easy class , and it's interesting :) The professor is such a sweet lady, sadly this is her last year at FIU so we won't have the honor of having her at the nursing school. The class basically teaches your standard and scopes of nursing, nursing history, medical ethics and pretty much all the information you need to know if nursing is right for you. I just started the class this semester, so I can't tell you yet if I did good or not, but so far I like it. Only my nutrition class is taking more time and energy than I would have thought Oh the school accepts again next year, so take Intro to nursing next semester if you can or the summer before Fall.
Mabel,
SOOO sorry for not having written back sooner!!! Thanks so much for your advice about that class. How are you doing so far in your classes?? I'm taking nutrition now but the class it so -whatever-. Micro lab is taking up almost all my study time. It's insane!!!!!!!!!!!! But I think I will do fine in the end, hopefully. I'm looking for office jobs to save up for Fall(assuming I get accepted? lol). So tell me how everything is. Hope all is well. :)
Hi :) Don't worry about it, I know how busy it gets!
Nutrition is taking a lot of time from me :S not because the material is hard, but because my professor is VERY tricky in her questions and very demanding, A quiz every week and a test like every two weeks I've been getting good grades, but Im going nuts keeping up with the reading. Bio lab is .. no comment.. I hate it! I'm taking biology 1 lab ( I already took micro bio Other than that, Anatomy is SUPER interesting, and SUPER demanding, but I'm learning a lot. I don't mind spending time on a class if I'm learning useful stuff ( unlike Bio lab) . Oh and intro to nursing ( they changed the name now at FIU by the way, its called nursing concepts and something something ) , It's ok, not too demanding, but we do have to interview a nurse and write a paper about it. So be prepared when you take the class, I also hear shes very picky about grammar, spelling and using APA correctly. Of course if you have any questions, let me know!
Ha sorry this was more of a vent
Tell me about it! i'm also on the job hunt for Jan-august to save money for nursing school, hopefully something in a calling center or office or clinic, or mall ( NO kmart They kept my friend there at 2-3am some nights)
Alright keep on working hard this semester :) I know I will.
Ahhh, I see. My micro lecture last semester was like that. She gave us SO many quizzes and tests. I liked the material so I wasn't too upset(not all the time anyway). I wish my nutrition class was more interesting. She doesn't really teach college level, I think. She kind of gives us baby work because most people in the class aren't even science majors. So I am not learning any "cool" stuff, lol.
I looooved Anatomy so much. That class was pretty crazy, at least first semester. I studied so much for one test. I kind of miss those days LOL I just loved it. So interesting. What a nerd.
Oh, thanks for the headsup about the nursing class!! That is super cool we need to interview an RN. Kind of scary. Does it matter what kind of an RN, like what department? Haha and don't worry about the vent, girl. I have a feeling we are going to have a lot of them in the future.
Oh I knowww I have applied everywhere. Even Kmart LOL! But I guess since I don't have any real experience, my application isn't very attractive. All I've ever done is tutor one on one to get money. So I am actually trying to look for kids to tutor. That is always something you can do, since you only need to do it a few hours a week and not get too tired to study and all. :)
I mean you won't be making $250 a week, unless you're really good LOL. I would get paid $25 an hour because my student(s) had money. But honestly, even $10/hr sounds awesome to me!!!!!!! Maybe you can make little posters and put them in the local elementary.
Also, on craigslist, some dental/medical/chiropractic offices have put up posts looking for front desk secretaries. I've emailed a few tonight. You can always try that too. I think craigslist it really good. OH! And if you have reliable transportation(I don't), try http://www.thebabysittingcompany.com. Its a babysitting company(duh) that finds the gigs for you. You just have to wear their little shirt. Look at the website and email the boss lady there. :-)
Thank you so much for the job tips :) I'll definitely be trying out the babysitting opportunity and tutoring, I like kids so both suit me :) Good luck finding something! One thing I know of is virtual customer service, like alpineaccess.com you get to work from home :) As long as you have a landline and you show you can speak clearly.
I'm so busy lately I have 3 exams in the next 6 days. I'm going nuts here, but I'll write after and let you know how those went. One of the exams is the bio lab Midterm
