STILL don't have a job?? Vent here!

Nurses New Nurse

Hi all! I've been on this site for a while now, but haven't posted much. however, i feel like it'll just make me (and hopefully a few others) feel a bit better about this whole job situation if we vent it out together. i just need to complain, and i need people who understand how frustrated and hopeless i'm feeling.

i graduated from a somewhat prestigious university over a year ago, and passed my nclex without a bead of sweat. great grades, great clinical experience, killer references and resume....still can't get a job. i live in the northeast, where things are tight...but still. i work at the grocery store...THE GROCERY STORE! i paid $100,000 to get a degree so that people can supervise how i bag their eggs and talk to me like i'm stupid. i have nothing against my current job - they're great to me and it pays my bills kinda sorta for now - but it's so damn frustrating!

on top of all of this, i'm getting so sick of people constantly saying to me "but i thought we needed nurses!"...when is oprah gonna do a show about all of us who are graduating and finding a completely closed off job market? and now that a second year of nurses are finishing up, us 2008 grads are getting more and more lost.

it's not like i'm not trying - i apply to jobs nearly non stop. i call and ask for nurse managers and recruiters personally, who never answer their phones or my voicemails. i feel like a complete and total failure pretty much all of the time, and don't know what to do. i have at least 15 friends in the same boat, but none of them currently live nearby and i don't have anyone to talk to about these feelings. i cry a lot when i'm alone, but put on a big smile and just tell people i'm staying optimistic and i'm still looking etc. etc.

anyway - if you wanna chime in, please do. i know our families and friends are probably getting sick of listening to us talk about this stuff, so it feels better to talk to strangers who understand. :)

much love and keep the faith, my friends. we're gonna rise above this someday.

Yes the job market is not as good as it has been in the past. You will get a job it is just going to take a little longer than it did a few years ago. Keep positive so you can give off good vibes during interviews.

I know it sucks. I hate when people say hang in there. I want to scream...'to what shall I hang on to?' I graduated in March 09, nclex june 09 passed. Started applying in January 09. Got no call backs, no interviews, nothing. Then about one month after graduating I got a really bad impacted tooth, had an absess grow in my throat and needed emergency surgery. While lying there recouping I get two student nurses that I knew quite well. One of them says 'they are hiring new grads for a new program at the hospital. So I applied. After a very long time I finally got an interview and I nailed it. My advice to you is be funny even if you don't feel like it. Don't appear desperate. Be light. Cause these are the people that you will be working with and nobody wants to work with a depressed newbie. Try to make it seem as though if chosen you will be the best coworker they have ever seen.

Just keep your chin up. Know that even this will make you stronger.

How can I get a job if they kept on asking for 1 to 2 years of experience? Why don't they give us new RN grads a chance to show them that we are willing and motivated to learn? I hate to see a lot of open positions for RN's with experience only and not getting filled. It just makes me feel sad :o

Gosh ya'll are scaring me....I pray to God the job market is better when I graduate in two years!

I know your pain, I couldn't find a job when I finished my NA course...But then I applied to a hospital about 90 miles from my hometown...stepped out on faith and was hired :-)

Good luck to everyone and remember when God closes a door, He opens a window...

What God has for me is for me :-)

Hello, I'm new to allnurses.com, a 2009 BSN, signed up today to get the gossip on the lack of jobs for grad RNs. I'm in Philadelphia - nobody is hiring new grads (except a few smaller hospitals are hiring new grads from their nursing schools only). I can't believe it, and now I'm learning there are 2008 grads that do not have jobs yet! I can absolutely relate to the person who wrote about how frustrating it is when people say "oh, there are tons of RN jobs" like I'm not looking hard enough. There are a lot of RN jobs here, but they all want experienced RNs - they specifically do not want new grads! Just venting -

Hello everyone - I am currently in school - and I have not got to my blocks yet but from the looks of these posts - I should really take the direction on trying to get hired thru the hospital before I get out of school - we always have recruiters trying to get us to interview and sign a contract to work from them for 2 years after we graduate- you all are making me think twice about it - or is there some kind of advice you can give on possibly becoming certified in something else to gain some experience prior to graduating ???? this is scary

These posts sound a lot like my feelings as a new RN struggling to get a job. I have been to many hospitals (although I already work for one) handing my resume. I am tired of people questioning the fact that a Registered Nurse cannot find a Job. Many people cant even believe it because they always hear that nurses are in demand. I try not to talk about it because some people talk to me like I am not trying hard enough. Everytime you call a place, they never return your call so you decide to go there, and now they simplify the message to you : "We dont hire new grads". How we gonna ever be experienced nurses without a job. I hope something will be done very...

Me personally, I would take a 2 year contract in a heartbeat! My school canceled their contract program! Because they didn't have enough positions for all the contracts they signed last year, this year they didn't even offer it to us! Depending on where you are geographically . . . . I guess some parts of the country are hiring.

I heard stories before I graduated about nurses not finding jobs, but I didn't know it would be like this.

IF I HAD KNOWN most places hire their externs first . . . I would have been an extern. The hospitals around here dont even have enough jobs to hire all their externs.

I am so sorry to hear that -I live in the Phoenix area and I just came back from a job fair where they were trying to pick up RN's however I pray that you have favor in this not so good market :) Thanks for sharing... I think I might go the route of EMT at the hospital while I wait- and start looking into some volunteer jobs as well - this got me really concern -but heck I am single, no kids, If I needed to relocate I will do it -

Funny you mentioned a job fair. I went to a nursing conference, and there were SCADS of hospital recruiters there, and they all said the same thing... here is our info, but we are not hiring right now.

So I am left to think, you killed how many trees to make these pretty folders and packets of info to pass out to prospective applicants and you have NO jobs?

Agghhhhh
