Choosing a specialty - website

Hello -

A while back there was a thread in which someone mentioned a website for med students that helps with choosing a specialty, but none of us knew the site's address at that time.

I just found such a website - but then I couldn't find the old thread. So here is the link for anyone who is interested:

http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/QuestionList.cfm

Granted, it's for med students, but maybe it can serve as a piece of the puzzle for RNs who are trying to figure out the same thing...

It's 130 questions long, takes about 15 minutes.

Interesting test. It listed pediatrics as my best match, which is what I want to do. Good thing I'm not interested in surgery, as it ranked last.

The test was indeed very interesting. I was posting my results here when my computer crashed. :angryfire

My number one was physical med and rehab. The field I'd like to go into (OB/GYN) was #7. I'd feel like I was on the wrong track if it came up lower on down the list, but I'm happy it was fairly close to the top.

One of the specialties listed, Aerospace Medicine, is something I'd like to do but it was #28! My dream job is working somewhere for NASA. Wonder if NASA hires nurses without me having to move to FL, TX, or CA?? :)

KarenAR:

Thanks so much for sharing this website with us. I really enjoy using it--and actually have gone through it several times. Anesthesiology ranks #1 for me, which is good because I'm seriously considering becoming a CRNA in the future. I agree with some other posts that it would be very helpful if the website actually showed which qualities and rankings went for each specialty. It's still very useful. Thanks again! Steph :)

That was a fun test!! My number one was Thoracic surgery..which is interesting because I have thought for the last few years I would of like to have been a surgeon. Also of note, Peds ranked last and I do have to say I hate peds!! Erin

Interesting test. I work OB currently and that ranked #26 for me. Liked my Emergency med rotation and that ranked near last. My number one was Nuerosurgery followed by plastics. I always thought of myself as more of a truama/cardiothorasic type if I ever ventured into medicine. Wonder how they come to this conclusion. BTW I tested myself twice (used my other email address) same results both times!
