First time CNA, will being fired from previous job make it difficult to find a job?

Published

Hi, so I recently completed my cna course, passed the state exams and everything and am currently looking for a new job. Prior to this, I worked as a direct care worker for a special needs adult. His lived on his own but had several staff members that rotated so he had 24 he staff. I very much enjoyed this job and was there for about 6 months. Then one day I receive a text from his mother (she is the employer ) saying my employment with him was terminated for "verbal aggression". I am a very honest person and am willing to own up to mistakes but I honestly have no idea where this came from or what she was talking about. I tried to ask her what exactly it wa that I did wrong but all she said was it was cumulative accounts of verbal aggression. I was very frustrated at the fact that 1. She didn't give me a straight forward answer and 2. That there was no prior mention of it before. If it was cumulative I would think she would let me know on the first account if she noticed something and I also would've liked to know so if I was doing something wrong so I could fix it. Long story short, I left very frustrated and confused. And now I'm worried I won't be able to find a job. I know it wasn't for anything severe like neglect or physical abuse but I'm still concerned. Am I just getting overly worked up about it ? Will I still be able to find jobs?

Specializes in Long term care.

Here's the thing: You don't really need to give this family as a reference. Since you were not certified by the state there is no record of it.

Do remember and learn from this experience regardless of whether or not what she said was true. When caring for others, you need to be aware of your tone of voice and body language and how you present requests to them.

Thank you for the response . Would it show up on a background check or anything?

Did she submit payments to the government, such as federal, state taxes, social security tax, etc., on your behalf? If not, then there is no record of the employment and I would not worry about it. I also would not list this on any job application.

I believe she did,yes.

Pay voucher showing this information? Surely you paycheck came with a statement of earnings/deductions. If not, I doubt that she submitted anything.

I also have no felonies or history of criminal record whatsoever. I haven't even got a ticket before haha. And all of my past care taking jobs before this last one , the employers all have nice things to say.

Yes my paycheck a came with the statement

If the employer did report the employee for taxes etc, there would be a record of her working for this person, BUT unless she, the care giver, was arrested or otherwise reported to the state for abuse, this "incident" would not show up in any background check.

You would know if you were reported to the state for inappropriate behavior etc because the state would then investigate the report and you would be interviewed by the state. If that hasn't happened by now, it probably never will since reports of abuse in most states have to be reported and investigated within 24 hours of the incident.

When you get your CNA certificate and apply for a position you do not need to tell them of this job and they will have no way of knowing you worked for her unless YOU tell them. It will NOT show up on a background check because you were NOT reported to the state for abuse....if you were, you'd know it by now....there would be no doubt.

You can explain the 6 months of employment gap by saying you were in classes, looking for employment, caring for family member...etc...

Thank you! Yeah there was none of that. It was just a simple , being let go from the job. Thank you for the helpful information. I really appreciate it. I have an interview Monday so hopefully all does well!
