First shifts

Is it possible for nurse anesthetists to work just first shift if they want to?

A nurse anesthetist can work just about whatever they'd like. Anytime of day and in any practice setting. It's all about deciding and then seeking out those positions. You can work M-F 7-3 or you can work 12s, 10s, 24s, etc.

Brett is correct. CRNAs work many different shifts depending on the practice needs and needs of the CRNA. For example, you can work in a Ambulatory Surgery Unit and work 7-3, M-F. No call, no W/E, or work in a hospital working all days and shifts.

I know CRNAs who work only evening shifts 1P-9P because that fits their lifestyle and others who work only night shifts. The big difference will be in the amount of call that is required by a group/hospital and whether your call shifts are "in-house" or "call from home". I also know of CRNAs that work in a small rural hospital with a staff of 2 CRNAs and no MDAs. They do their scheduled cases during the day, but are on-call every other night! Luckily, they probably do not get called in very often, but it still means you have little freedom and time off.

If I take a staff position the hospital where I am doing clinicals, I will be working mostly 7A-3P with 16 hr in-house call every 7 days (24hr when that falls on W/E). I will have the choice to take call or not, but will probably choose to take it since it means making a significant amount more money.

However, it would be nice to find a job with less call and similar pay and benefits. My options are open.

Whatever floats your boat!

the position i just contracted for is m-f 8,10 (and in the future 12) hour shifts - no on call and no wkends - if you choose to do on call or a saturday the pay is more...but the base pay is so good - you don't really need to...

good luck

Wow, I appreciate your responses guys!

I'm just really looking into the future. If I have children I would really like to be there with them after school and into the night, additionally I would really like to take time for myself and not become so burnt out by continuing with my evening yoga/ballet classes-to keep myself healthy to provide the best care for my patients. The shifts you guys are talking about can allow me to do all of these.

Again, thank you for your help.
