So we got our "study guide" for fundamentals. most of consist of answering questions as vague as "how to portray care ", and "fluid and electrolytes". There are over a hundred-twenty questions like that. So it comes down to test taking strategies. Anyone have any good ones? So far I have the ABC rule, perform the least invasive procedure first, and when in doubt the correct answer is always "c" -haha

Two of my classes have similar studyguides, but I still think I can pick out what it is that the teacher wants us to get out of those subjects. For pharmacology, our final isn't comprehensive, in fact, it's really just the last of 6 tests for the semester, so I know how to study for it. Interventions and Assessment are comprehensive, but the instructors did a fairly good job about with telling us where to focus our studies (ex: go through our lab sheets vs scanning the chapters in the textbook). Mostly I'm just trying to give myself more time to prepare for these finals than I have for the regular tests. Good luck in your studies!

Oh I hate that! They quit calling them "study guids" and now changed them to "test maps" at my school. I have had them in all of my nursing classes so far and it is basically just the bold topics in the text book. Did your teacher give out any test hints while lecturing? That could help point you in the right direction. Good luck!

In addition to the ABCs and least invasive procedure first....tips that I've used to answer NCLEX style questions is that

-questions asking what is the "priority" or what the nurse should "do first" always have to do with safety

-remember the nursing process...assess first! Then call the physician!

-read each questions carefully and thoroughly. I cant tell you how many times I selected the wrong answer because I didn't read the question

-always go with your first instinct and don't change answers. The questions where I change my answer....my first choice was more often than not the correct one.

Practice, practice, practice the NCLEX questions in the Saunders NCLEX book. The more NCLEX style questions you do the better you'll get at doing them.

Prentice Hall's NCLEX book is also excellent.

Hi itsmejuli

I will be a 1st semester nursing student in Jan 2010. I am very interested in getting the Saunders NCLEX to help with testing, would you happen to have the isbn#?

I second the Saunders book...mine has been a savior!

the ISBN is 978-1-4160-3708-8

Its the 6th edition. I am not sure if a 7th has come out yet...and I honestly havent looked. But some of my classmates use the 5th edition and that is just as good.

GREAT!!! Thanks so much melmarie23. I am excited and scared at the same time. I just want to be prepared so I will definitely check into Saunders.

Fundamentals Success has also been good for first semester, our school had it on the optional list and I used it for my fundamental class. I have also found that the CD's that come with the books also have a lot of practice questions. In fact some of the questions on our Pharm book CD have been on our exams.
