85 on First Quiz (Nutrition 101)

Published

Hello Everyone!

It is the second Monday of the Spring Quarter and I already feel like I am being pulled throw a shredder.

I am new here, so I will give a quick background:

I am a 26 year-old wife and mama to two. I am taking my first quarters of pre-reqs at Shoreline Community college in Washington, which consists of Math 146, English 101, and Nutrition 101. I work part-time as a research assistant to a PhD candidate and stay home with my toddler 95% of the time.

So far I have been very careful with studying and doing coursework, as well as time management. However, yesterday I took my first quiz in Nutrition 101 and scored an 85. I have been kicking myself since I submitted it. To be fair, I did have a bouncing toddler on my head during the majority of the quiz, but since it was due by 11:59pm yesterday, I had to take it when I took it. I also had worked on a 3-part assignment for this class during the week and was able to wrap it up right before taking the quiz. I am not making excuses, just bummed, and hoping to make better arrangements for quiz taking next time.

Anyway, thank you for reading this if you did! Are there any parents here who have a really good system for studying and coursework? I know that the journey to nursing school will be tough and I am prepared to push through…gracefully, haha.

85% isn't a bad score. I understand that it's lower than what you wanted, but it's nothing to beat yourself up about.

I'm a full time student and I have two kids that I homeschool. Because of this, I have to be pretty flexible. My one hard and fast rule is for quizzes/tests. I always do them at least two days before the deadline.

Other assignments like papers or discussions I'm not as strict about. I do take out time every day for schoolwork. My husband takes over whatever needs doing - I just tell him I need to study. Sometimes it's a 10 minute review before a test. Sometimes it's an hour or more of writing. It really depends on what I have going on.

You'll get there - it took me at least a full semester to get in a good place. Good luck!

I could have written this last summer. I was a fool who took nutrition AND phsycology with a 9 month old. I remember bouncing him on my knee while I took my timed quizzes for both classes. My stress level was through the roof! Once my little guy pushed a key and the quiz submitted without me finishing! Ahhh it was awful but I got A's in both in the end.

I say be optimistic and try to enjoy as much as you can. When I look back now I smile but at the time I was a nervous wreck. Stay on top of the reading and you'll shine. Try not to be too hard on the toddler. I know my little guy wasent used to me sitting at the computer when he was awake so I tried to do quizes as he napped or after bed time. Sometimes I'd put him to bed and he'd wake mid quiz and shatter my concentration. I shudder thinking about how my stomach would twist. But I got through it successfully and so will you!!

Best wishes on your journey!
