Hello Lorie

I am getting ready to accept my first PMHNP (psych NP) job. We've already negotiated salary, benefits, scope of job, etc.

Should I have the contract reviewed by an attorney before signing? If so, what kind of attorney? A small business attorney who understands contracts, or someone with specific healthcare knowledge?

Thank you

Dear First Psych NP Job

Congratulations on becoming a PMHNP! The specialty is so badly needed in the healthcare community.

Unless I understood every word in the contract, I would not sign until I had an attorney review it. You should locate an attorney who has expertise in nursing and contract matters. In fact, there are some nurse practitioner attorneys who are great. Check out The American Association of Nurse Attorneys at taana.org.

Good luck!

Lorie
