First Pediatrics Job!

Posted

Specializes in LTC. Has 2 years experience.

I just got offered my first office pediatrics job!! Any tips or anything I should know about? This is a whole new kind of thing for me. I'm super excited, but I don't want to go in blind.

I start Monday!

JadedCPN, BSN, RN

Specializes in Pediatrics, Pediatric Float, PICU, NICU. Has 15 years experience.

Congrats on the new job! If this is your first experience working with pediatrics, it will be an adjustment but you’ll get the hang of it.
I would freshen up on general ideas of Ericson/Piaget development stages to have a better idea on how to approach each age group because they are so different. Simple things, such as getting a BP, can be harder on a screaming kid - when possible, use the parents to help because that is usually their comfort zone. Have something fun dangling from your badge so you can distract the younger ones, and brush up on the popular cartoons and toys so you can engage the school aged kids.
