First PCS move after COT with family and dogs

Ok, so I know I am probably not going to be going to COT until August 2011 or later but I am a planner and as usual trying to plan ahead! I understand from other posts that you are typically given 3 days to report to your first duty station. I have husband, two kids, and two dogs. Do I try to arrange for the TMO right before graduation then all of us travel together from AL to first PCS? Or is it better to go alone to report to first duty station then during house hunting days have family/pets join me? I have resigned myself to the fact that I probably will not be present at our home in AR while the movers are packing us. Anyone who has "been there, done that" want to share your experience and any words of advice?

Tell hubby to keep a file with copies of orders, your contracts, marriage lic, everyones Birth Cert., bank info etc with him at all times during travel, pack up etc. It seems as if he will reference this no less than 1x/daily when dealing with mil agencies. Also it may be helpful to try to get them ID cards before you leave if possible.

If AF movers are like Army movers, the company will pack everything and ship it. All you have to do is supervise. I would pack the hubby & kiddies bags/travel toys and place all items that are traveling with you in 1 room/place and tell the movers to keep away until last.

Also they would not ship liquids(candles), or perishables during my last PCS.

Good Luck

the authorized travel time is actually based on time, distance, and heading. if he graduates in the morning and has to report to eglin after cot, he'll need to be there in a few hours to sign in. a person in my cot flight was surprised to find out the travel time from la to fl was just a couple of hours. naturally, if he has to report to korea or turkey - he'll get a few days of travel time.

During your "house hunting days" are you confined to a x # of mile radius to your new base? Would it be possible to move during that time frame?
