First NP Job

Published

I am a relatively new NP- been on the job for 7mos now. Wondering if anyone would like to share what their first NP job was like, how long they lasted, regrets, and of course the joys.......Thanks!:coollook:

LOL..so what is the point of getting a masters when you are making less than a RN. Honestly, maybe it is a waste of time. However, I feel the autonomy and flexibility will be more beneficial in the end to me.One of my preceptors told me the first NP job is going to be the crappiest because you will make less, but I would hope after 5-10 years of experience and a decent specialty that the pay will max out to be more like a PA than if I stayed at the bedside.

I am sure people here are tired of me typing this out, but please know this varies by region. I was an RN with 12 years of experience and making 32.00 PRN with no benefits so that is pretty much the top of the pay scale for this region (TX). That is a gross income of $66K per year.

Myself and my fellow classmates have ALL STARTED at $82K-85K and a good majority of us have raises at the 3-6 month review mark that will put us at $91-95K at a mere 6 months after graduation. The only nurses I know if in Texas that are making that kind of $$ are busting butt working 12 hour nightshifts with multiple overtime shifts throughout the year.

Specializes in Emergency, Cardiac, PAT/SPU, Urgent Care.

The only job I ever had where I made more PER HOUR as an RN was working a per diem weekend nights position 24 hours total EVERY weekend (with over 10 years of RN experience). However, if looking at yearly salary, I would not make close to the yearly salary which I currently make as brand new NP at my current position - which is no weekends, no holidays, no call, completely day shift. I absolutely can not complain.
