First NP interview for long term care

Specialties NP

Hello everyone.

I am new NP and I have an interview coming up with the united health group for a long term care setting.I was told that the position comes with a bonus as well. I would like to know if anyone ever worked for this company, and if so how were they? Any suggestions on what questions I should ask concerning the position and the bonus? Also, is anyone working in this setting that can shed light on how work is like in this environment as an NP?. Thank you for your responses.

Specializes in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine.

Ask about the specific responsibilities of the position, how long an orientation you will get, what are the day to day expectations, etc. You do want to know about the bonus, but you want to make sure that you'll get the training you need as a new NP. Keep in mind that it takes about 6 months for an experienced NP to really learn the ropes at a new company and can take about a year for a brand new NP because you'll be learning the role and the company. A lot of long term care is about keeping people out of hospitals, managing chronic and acute conditions in house as much as possible, interfacing with staff (CNAs, housekeepers, nurses, etc) and being a support for the family. It also means being willing to discuss advance directives, help with tough decision making, and sometimes having to say, "This is not something in the best interests of the patient." It helps if you really like geriatric patients. If you aren't thrilled with geriatrics as the only age group (or mostly the only age group) you'll see, this may not be the place for you. On the other hand, it can be very rewarding. I've been working in geriatrics for two years and am just starting my third year and love it.

Thank you so much IsabelK. you gave me such an in-depth valuable information that I was not aware of. Your suggestions were very helpful. Thank you.

Hi I was wondering if you got the job and are currently working in LTC?
