First Night of OB!!!

You know I wasn't really expecting to enjoy this clinical, those little kids are scary to me since they are so vulnerable. After my teacher grilled us on drug cards and are goal plans, we relaxed and enjoyed the evening. I guess being a guy, I didnt think I was going to like it because I didnt meet any male nurses, the only males I saw were the docs and one father. But I got to help do the first bathe, do the physical and neurological assessment, do measurements on the child, and assisted with footprint. Two of my classmates got to see live births, lucky them. I am nervous because being a guy (correct me if Im wrong) Im not sure if women will allow to help care for them when checking like the episiotomy (sp)? cuts, or educating them on breastcare and feeding, etc. Does anyone have any experiences or opinions on this? I want to do well in this clinical/class, but I am nervous because it would be odd for me since Ive never done this before?

We have a guy in our clinical who tells the women that if there is anything that makes them uncomfortable, to let him know and he won't do it. But that does not mean that you should not be able to experience a live birth or anything else in that nature. Usually, if you are following a good nurse, she will talk the mother into letting a guy watch her give birth and assess her because it is for learning purposes. This is usually very easy because most of the time their drs. are guys. At the teaching hospitals near me, the moms have to sign a consent form stating that they allow students in their room, whether they be male or female.

Think about it this way.....how many of those OB MDs you see are MALE. Most women have had a man not her hubby probing her private area for the past 8 months....why should you be different just because you are a nurse(-ing student).

All I can say is that (1) when in labor, we never noticed who was in the room, much less your gender! (2) there is no such thing as modesty in labor, (3) the more kids we have already had, the less we are going to care about your gender. and....(4) most guys that I have met in nursing are gay (Yes! I KNOW not all male nurses are gay!)....and many of us women are more comfortable with a gay man than we are women! LOL!!!!

BTW, my brother is a nurse.....and ...oh well, he is gay!
