First Job

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I just graduated in December and passed the NCLEX the end of January. I am currently waiting for my license. I started my new job on the 9th of Feb. I am working at a rehabilitation hospital. They mainly have spinal cord and brain injuries, along with ortho patients. I have been pretty bored sitting in the classroom part of orientation but the other day we got to get out walk around and meet some of the patients there. Us orientees met a patient that has been in the hospital for 6 weeks who came in with a cervical infection out of nowhere. The patient came to the hospital pretty much as a quad with little gross motor movement in the upper extremities. When we met her she had gained back all fine and gross motor movement of the upper extremities. She also had started feeling some muscle tone and movement in her left quad. She now can lift her left leg and foot up and down. She is now feeling the same in the right but unable to move it now. A week ago they had done an EMG and it showed no activity. I think that this is so great and this is the reason I wanted to be a nurse. I know at times this job will be challenging but it is so rewarding in the end when you can see such improvements. I know not everyone will be able to function at the ability that this woman has. I really think I am going to like this job. Just wanted to spread some positive words. :yeah:

Specializes in Telemetry.

That's amazing. It's wonderful to see those miracles and recoveries. I, too, am a new grad from December, so I know what you mean by wanting to get out there and do something.

That's why I love rehab nursing.....Rehab hospitals is where u get really acute patients such as the one u described....but the best part is seeing them greatly improve as the weeks go by and then they get to go home or to a snf.

Congrats to you and much success in your new career as a Rehab Nurse:yeah:
