First job...HELP!!

Nurses General Nursing

I am a nursing student...well I graduate in two days! I was offered a job on a medical floor that I like, and the pay is pretty good too. The nurse recruiter told me that she can not guarantee a certain shift...even though I told her I wanted a day shift. Has this happened to everyone who gets offered a nursing job? I am thinking they tell everyone this because something can come up once you begin orientation. I would not start orientation for another two months anyway. Should I keep looking for a day job???

Keep looking. All hospitals will tell you the same story - that you will start out on night shift and will be moved to days as soon as position will be open (which might never happen at all), or that only experienced nurses will be given day shifts, etc, etc. Just stay firm and keep looking. It took me three interviews at three different hospitals to get a day shift. Although it was not my first choice hospital due to longer commute, hours are more important to me that inconvinience of longer driving.

Good luck to you!

It took me 12 years to make it to day shift I some times wonder when I see brand new employees get mad when a present employee who has put in their time gets that long waited for shift I missed alot of my sons high school ect but I knew that was part of entering a 24/7 world of nursing. I resent the fact that you get "but I have kids" I did too and I am sorry, I missed out too but thats the way it is. If you can't wait it out go work in an office that runs on the hours you want.

I'M SORRY, BUT I THINK PEOPLE WILL DO TO YOU WHAT YOU LET THEM GET AWAY WITH. IT'S JUST HARD FOR ME TO BELIEVE (ESPECIALLY W/THE NURSING SHORTAGE) THAT IN THESE 50 STATES, ALL OF THESE CITIES, AND ALL OF THESE HOSPITALS, THAT YOU CAN'T GET THE SHIFT YOU WANT. ALTHOGH MY ANGER IS NOT DIRECTED TOWARD YOU, I'M SICK OF PEOPLE TELLING ME WHAT I CAN AND CAN'T HAVE!:angryfire

I'm a new grad and I just got hired on days, but my area has a very high need for nurses (I also have another certification that helped the manager justify giving me day shift).

I totally understand what you mean. I just graduated last week and I have a student tech job in Peds. It's where I want to be but apparently my manager had already made it up in her mind to hire someone else! I just got hired March. I have done all my orientation and training and everything plus even picked up a night shift (without preceptor) but I show no initiative according to her.

Long story short, now I'm in between a rock and a hard place because even though I will not be transitioning to this unit, I am still working as a tech. I am looking elsewhere. I'm just making a decision on should I resign now or wait until I have another job.

But I do feel your pain and I understand the confusion and whirlwind you are in. I'm stuck with all evening and night shifts now (my manager didn't even schedule me so I had to take what's left).

What you seek, you will find; be patient and believe. It will happen as you wish. :innerconf
