First interview

Specializes in ICU.

I have my first real NP job interview coming up! (Yay!!!) I'm incredibly intimidated by the itinerary I was sent. It's a 5 hour process! Is that fairly normal for NP interviews? Do you all have any tips for me?

Congratulations and good luck!! What setting are you interviewing for?

A cardiac ICU in an academic medical center!

Specializes in ACNP-BC, Adult Critical Care, Cardiology.

I've had an interview with a similar schedule and it was actually a Cardiothoracic surgery ICU NP position. I met with the practice manager, the Chief Intensivist, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Chief, the ICU Nurse Manager, and the NP's who currently worked in the unit. Most of the conversation ended up being casual and not as intimidating as I thought. There were "boring and just sitting in a waiting room" period between interviews, tour of the unit, etc. I got the job.

That's similar to how this interview process goes as well. I will meet with a few of the MDs and the medical director (each one at a time), have lunch with the NPs/PAs, shadow the medical director for awhile, and meet with the lead NP. The main difference is that I won't interview with any of the surgeons (even though a huge population in this ICU are surgical patients) or the nurse manager.

I sure hope each interview turns out to be fairly casual! I've done many hours of clinical on this unit- so I'm familiar with most of those I'll be meeting with. I'm still nervous though!!

Update: I got the job!!! [emoji2] Now to take/pass the board exam so I can start working this summer!

So did it end up being fairly casual or more formal?

I felt it was fairly casual....but that may have been because I already knew most of them.
