First interview HELP!! (new grad)

Published

Hello All,

I just recieved a call, for my first interview next week! I just recently graduated in May 11. I am going to interview for a nicu position, and am just wondering what are some questions I should expect and what types of questions should I ask? I was told there will a management interview and a peer interview. what should I expect from both? Thanks in advance for your responses..:clown:

Specializes in ER.

Probable questions:

What is your experience in with infants?

What are your strengths?

What is your weakness?

Why do you want to work for "X" hospital?

What do you know about "X" hospital/unit?

Unlikely Questions:

If you were an animal, what would you be?

What came first, chicken or the egg?

Most other questions are going to be ones that you have no ability to prepare for... These may include scenario questions (remember ABC's alway!) and acknowledge ethical dilemma scenarios have no right or wrong answer.

Other questions that you can't prepare for, yet will be easy to answer will include things like

I see that you worked for "Y" as a tech, what were your duties there?

You went to "blah University" how many clinical hours did you receive in "X"?

All you need is the truth for these buggers.

Other that that, I find that not over studying rote answers is best. I know that everyone wants to be super prepared, but being over prepared can make your replies sound insincere.

Prepare some point form notes, but follow the actual cues you are given in conversation.

Last, have fun!

Be professional but try to let your personality show. Don't become lost in a sea of unforgettable interviewees :)

Questions they could ask you:

This nursing job requires training and experience in ......... Tell me how your training and experience fulfill this requirement

Why are you interested in this particular nursing job?

Why do you want to work in our hospital and/or community?

Also be prepared to have some knowledge about the mission/vision of the hospital and I would be prepared to say how the facility mission/vision aligns with your career goals.

If you are leaving a position, be prepared to answer why you want to leave (be positive in your response!!) Don't slam your current employer..

Questions you can ask your interviewer...

how do you train... is it a mixture of classroom and hands on. How long will your training be? What is the average patient load should you expect to have? Will you be assigned a single preceptor or work with multiple individuals? If you don't feel comfortable at the end of your oriention, could you request more time? How will you be evaluated during your orientation? On average, how many nurses and techs per shift.

You could ask your interviewer what was their career path and how did they end up in thier current position?

Good luck... you can do an internet search you can find alot more potential interviewer/interviewee nursing questions.

Thank you soooo much.. you guys were more than helpful...I will continue to do more searches on net:clown:
