Financial Aid

Right now, I am completing my pre-nursing courses at a community college. The tuition is super cheap and I am not paying anything out of pocket as the Pell was able to cover everything. We are not high earners and we also have a small child.

My husband wants to buy a home and not rent anymore. It wouldn't be our dream house, just a small starter home but it would obviously be an asset. We don't have the money to put down right now so we would apply for a SETH grant. Husband wants to avoid paying rent.

Is this a good move financially? I don't know about it because if I lose my aid due to owning a home, I don't want to do it right now. I am avoiding student loans this way and I'd prefer to avoid them for as long as possible.

I don't know why owning a home would figure into it. Talk to your Financial Aid office - they should know.

I don't remember the FAFSA asking anything about home ownership. But I imagine any type of outside grant would be considered income, so that could decrease the amount you get because your expected contribution would go up.

I second seeing someone at the Financial Aid office.
