Hello all

I've been a ER nurse for 2 1/2 years but my heart wasn't in it all. I was sooo miserable but anyway I recently got offered a job on the mother/baby unit this has been my dream !! Any tips ?? I know it's going to be a drastic change

How do you transition to M/B/ L&D? I can't even get an interview because I have no experience in the specialty. I've been an Adult PCU/M/S RN for a year now...I really would love to get into it, its just almost impossible to get them to even look at my resume!

Honestly all I did was apply and luckily I got interviewed and hired . I have 2 1/2 yrs ED experience. I knew I always wanted to get into M/B or L&D or nursery so I did my NRP and STABLE plus I have ACLS and PALS .. When she interviewed me she said she was impressed that I had these certifications already . Oh join the AWHONN and see if that helps . Just keep trying I graduated in dec 2009 and I'm FINALLY getting my dream come true.. DNT GIVE UP

Does your hospital have a women's hospital or OB unit? I worked adult PCU for a year then I easily transferred to the women's hospital. I was able to put in a transfer as it's considered a lateral move. Current employees have a favorable chance of getting hired because they rather us stay with the hospital system than go somewhere else.

I applied at a entirely different hospital. I tried to transfer at my old job and unfortunately they wanted 3-5 years experience .

Yes, we do have a Mother/Baby unit in my hospital and at other hospitals within my system...a lot of the requirements on job postings state previous experience....so how do I break out of that? I'm eligible to put in for transfer at the end of this month, however I don't know if they'll even look at my application because of my lack of any experience in that dept other than nursing school rotations (which was like 3 years ago!)

*Update * it's been about 7 months well I only stayed in M&B for 1 week and transferred to L&D! í ½í¸ it's not that I didn't want to be in mom and baby but in my interview/application I applied for L&D but only PT was available and told the director my interest was in both areas and since my background was ED the director switched me as soon as an opening became available totally unexpected but happy regardless still soooo much to learn in L&D those lady partsl exams aren't easy and surgery part of L&D is a process

Oh okay great!! I just accepted a L&D position and will be starting next month. I am coming from a Telemetry floor and have been out of school for a while. I hope the transition is not too tough for me. How long was your orientation?
