So i passed my nclex on Feb of 2011. Cudnt find a job for a whole year. So, i jus worked as a medtech and a caregiver for the time being, i got a bit rusty in my nursing skills.June 2012, I finally got hired. Thing is I forgot alot of my nursing procedures and what to do. I still remember how to pass meds and such. Today was my first day at orientation, and boy when they were telling me this stuff i forgot. LIke gtube, insulin, cather, suction.. Should I study my school notes again? Or that wont help? Im afraid to mess up. Im so lost when it comes to charting, how to do admissions/discharge(They failed to teach me that at school). Also in nursing school we never took Doctor's calls.. also new to that. Any tips for a newly hired nurse like me? That hasnt been to a clinical setting in almost 2yrs?

Congrats!! Youtube is a good place to start, if you're tight on money b/c they have lots of videos on various skills & that can be very helpful. If money is not an issue, there are DVDs you could purchase on Amazon that review nursing skills. I wouldn't worry too much about the Dr's calls. I'm sure there will be someone there to help you with that.

Reviewing old school notes wouldn't hurt. Also, never be afraid to ask questions. There are not stupid questions. What I've noticed, there is a lot they don't cover in school, you just learn it on the job. So don't feel lost, take it one step at, if you need a cry break which I needed a few times...take them. Before you know it, it will all become second nature. My job though was an on-call job at a SNF and eh...censes have been going down and they hired three on-call LPN's at the same time...so I'm not getting hours. I haven't worked in three months. So I feel like I know nothing again. ugh.
Good luck! You will do just fine. Just breathe
