I'm a new Grad who just recently got a job offer at a skilled nursing facility, I am so excited to land my first job after I waited six months to get into a nurse residency at the hospital I was working as a nurse extern but did not get a job offer after two interviews, first I was very saddened but at the end I had to pick up the pieces. After applying to every hospital I can think of ,I finally decide to give a nursing home a shot, can anyone give me some highlights on what to look for, what I will be doing on a day today basis, and what the procedures are when there's a code?

Congrats on your first job! I am still looking for one as well. I was fortunate enough to be offered 3 jobs before I took the exam but I turned them down to focus on my exam. Big mistake but it is what it is. I was just so convinced that I was going to fail. Needless to day Im back on my job hunt and am focusing on nursing homes at this point. I got offered a night shift position. Pay is exactly what my friends are making at the hospitals around here.
Have you talked to the DON about it or checked out the geriatric specialty page? Ive seen posts about job responsibilities there. When I interviewed the DON pretty much told me how the night shift routine would go. She was a night shift RN there before she became ADON and now DON. She said it was her first and only job after school.
I am enrolled in an RN-BSN program so hope to end up in a hospital afterwards. Good kuck and I hope you enjoy your first job!
Hi Kgirl,
Thanks for your words of wisdom, but I was not interviewed by the DON because she is leaving and she was not doing any interviews the two weeks I had my application there and believe me it was for the best. I am schedule for orientation and I have no clue what it's going to be like.
In the facility I interviewed for it is about 3 weeks total. The first night I would follow a nurse around and the second night would be doing tasks with the help of my preceptor. And every night there would be additional duties added. I have not accepted the job yet because I'm unsure about the orientation and whether it will work for me. I wonder if yours will be like that? When do you start?
Well they are sending me to their sister location for two days, plus an extra day there before I come back to them however the lady from administration didn't really go into details if it was just going to be a general orientation or clinical and when I asked about the type of schedule I'm going to be in she said the staffer will call me,so now I'm wondering if I should wear a uniform or regular clothes for tomorrow.

Well cincin, I've worked in nursing homes for years as well as hospitals. Nursing homes are usually the places first time nurses get hired.

Nspirit, know any first time nurses who were hired as nurse supervisors or nurse managers?
