I'm a new nursing student and were doing research on Fetal alcohol syndrome and i'm wondering has anyone ever come across a case of it before and how did they deal with it.

Hi Smilez welcome to allnurses.com

I worked for HeadStart in the mid-70s. Approximately 1/4 of the children were eligible due to some handicap. I recall one little boy "T" who most definitely had FAS. He was about 4. T had the typical facial characteristics. He looked like a little pixie, high cheekbones, upswept brows, and he had almost pointed ear tips. He also moved at a mile a minute. If you took your eye off of him a second he'd be into something else. Hyperactive? Yes.

Anyway his mom loved her Gin. T was a late baby and all his sibs were well into adulthood. Our director took special interest in T when we noticed on Mondays he was more active, dirty and HUNGRY. With a little investigation she found that his "mother" would lock him in the closet in the carport as she couldn't handle him. Well our director took him home with her one weekend and mom never noticed. Child Protective Svs and the Sheriff were involved in taking custody.

The bottom line is T would be in his 20's by now. Mom has passed away and the director moved out of state. Through the grapevine I heard T is in a state facility somewhere. It was one of the most awful things I've seen in many years of nursing.
