I'm a student in CT-ICU (second day today) and saw an epidural used in a fresh double lung today. I understand why they use them in these cases (did a bit of question asking and research) though didn't think to ask what was running through it (will find out tomorrow!)
What sorts of other situations are epidurals used in CVICU?

Generally Epidurals are you used for thoracic surgeries esophagectomies, collis/nissens and things of that sort, they are occasionally used for lung tx but that's pretty rare, though I can only speak for my institution. It's normally fent and bupivacain either 5mcg or 3mcg in either 0.1 or 0.2, dosages vary an can be adjusted to pt condition
And to answer your question about the Narcan
First off the Answer is No, You shouldn't even think about touching that epidural unless the letters after your name say CRNA or MD
Secondly, IF they needed narcan, it's gonna be given IV, it readily crosses the Blood-Brain Barrier and will reverse someone rather quickly. However, remember Narcan causes instant and immediate withdrawl, so if you just worked really hard to get their pain under control, you're going to throw all ur hard work out the window.
