FENS no longer requirement for IEN in Texas

Published

FENS Refresher Course UpdateEffective: July 14, 2016? Effective immediately, the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) no longer requires internationally educated nurses to complete the Foreign Educated Nurses

Refresher Course (FENS) as a postrequisite to passing the NCLEX for the Texas BON. Internationally-educated applicants are eligible for initial licensure in Texas:

1) if the individual graduated from an approved foreign nursing education programwithin the past four years, or

2) if the individual graduated from an approved foreign nursing education program MORE than four years ago, BUT HAS PRACTICED NURSING WITHIN THE PAST FOUR YEARS.

If an internationally-educated applicant is not eligible under either of the above two categories, then he/she must re-educate, or obtain initial nurse licensure by exam in another state, then endorse into Texas. All internationally-educated applicants for Texas nurse licensure must pass the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX RN within four years of his/her graduation date or date of licensure eligibility.

What does ‘date of licensure eligibility' mean? For purposes of the NCLEX, the date of licensure eligibility means the issuance date of the first Authorization to Test (ATT).

That's Good. This FENS was a cluster any way.

There was only a couple companies giving the FENS. I called one company and they tried to recruit me to find hospitals they could shadow nurses in, which I found very odd.

If the Texas BON really wanted a refresher course they would of had it more organized.

HI, Im a foreign Educated NUrse from the philippines. I am in Texas now . I graduated 2011 and I only have 1 year hospital experience . I have read the BON Texas Refresher Course UPdate and it states .

What does "re- educate" mean ? Does that mean I have to take a refresher course online for 120 hours and clinical hours or Does that mean I have to start from scratch like Start from 0?

I just need some clarification with this

Since you are in Texas now, you can call Tx BON for more clarification.
