Feelings about first injection

Published

Today in clinical we gave our first injections into a patient (flu vaccine). My instructor was on top of me, and didn't let me have to time think since we were running out of time we had on the floor, which made me extremely nervous and I started to freak out. The injection went pretty good...except that I was so nervous I didn't even think about identifying the patient before giving the injection (which is horrible!!!) I just walked in and said hello I am here to give you your injection! She immediately scolded me for that which is appropriate but also said I did a good job actually doing the injection. I was really freaked out/emotional and I just started crying. This wasn't something that was graded but I'm just so nervous she could fail me for the stupid thing I did. Does anyone have any advice. I feel like an idiot ...

It's ok. My first injection, I was so surprised when it went in so easily, I pulled the needle out without giving the meds and had to draw up a new syringe

eh, my first injection was at the end of the day so I had my instructor, my 7 others in my cohort, the respiratory lady, the patient's sister and the patient!! Talk about uneasy. She had also suffered a stroke and was in with pneumonia. I had to give her the injection in the abdomen and as I was about to stick her, she coughed! stomach jerked out and in and I freaked out. My instructor said just like a dart. In it went and everything was fine. But yeah, still slightly traumatized but now I'm an injection ninja. In and out. No time for coughing haha. You won't fail, and you likely won't forget the patient identifiers again! Good luck!

Thank you so much
