as if it weren't bad enough...we went to clinicals yesterday and a nurse was telling us that she had our instructor and failed her class (she ended up switching to the 4 year program)...9 people out of 29 passed that semester:uhoh21:...i just don't know...i feel defeated already

You know what, we ALL have felt "defeated" at one point or another in nursing school, and you will feel it more than once! I am a 4.0 student, and I know--that this semester, that will change. Is it hard to deal with? YES! Do I beat myself up about it? YES! But can I stop and learn from my mistakes, OH YES!! Take these tests as learning experiences, that's exactly what they are. You need to review that material and see the rationales for why the answers were what they were and why you chose a different answer. Does your instructor go over the exams or do you guys just act like it never happenned (I have some instuctors that go over them and give rationale, and others that just act like we did not just take a test the next week). If they do give you the opportunity to review, REVIEW THE MATERIAL! You will NEED to grasp those concepts. Ask your instructor if you can meet with them to go over your exam and talk through it---instructors WANT YOU TO SUCCEED! I know we sometimes think one is "out to get us" but I really do not believe that to be the case. If your books do not have NCLEX review questions at the end of the chapters, go out and purchse and NCLEX prep book--it will help with EVERY CLASS YOU TAKE! Seriously, those tests are structured the exact same. Sometimes it's all about seeing your thinking through the question and how you need to revise it...this is a totally new way of thinking for many and it is an adjustment, but guess what..LOOK HOW MANY HAVE GOTTEN THROUGH!! This TOO shall pass and YOU WILL BE AN NURSE! We ALL STUMBLE and fall, but it is how you get back up--do not STAY DEFEATED, you defeat that next test! Good luck, and know that we are here with you...

Oh forget about 4.0 GPA! I used to be so serious about getting all A's in all the tests before nursing school. Once I started nursing school, worrying too much about grades didn't help me much. I got B's and C's and felt like it is end of the world in my first semester. Now, instead of worrying about grades, I put all my heart in learning patho, pharm, nursing skills, etc to build a strong foundation. Now in my 3rd semester, I eventually got all my A's. Remember, the first and second semesters are the hardest especially if you have no background whatsoever in nursing, but once you build your foundation, you will sail through with ease! Hang in there!!!

Have u reviewed your tests? Have u talked to your teacher and sought help? I just finished Med/Surg 1 and I never studied so much for a class!

Maybe how u are studying isn't allowing u to grasp the right material. I use an NCLEX to help; I always read that first then the assigned chapters from class to help bring it all together. This really helped me.

Do NOT give up! U can rebound from this. Do u study alone or in groups?

Maybe modifying how you currently study can help give u the edge u need.

I feel for you, this is a hard class and alot of students struggle. But u have to understand the critical thinking aspect to get to the right answers.

That's why the NCLEX is an awesome resource.

Keep studying and stay positive!

:nuke:thanks for all the responses...i actually made a higher grade on the second test than i though i had (instead of a 75, i got a 77.25). the class average was 70. so my total avg right now is a 76% (with 80% passing). i am not too far off...i have a cardio test on the 17th that i will study for like i've never studied before. :specs:

i don't study in a group because i find that we start talking about things to don't pertain to the information at all:uhoh3:; however, a friend and i met in the library before our second test for a few hours and it was nice to just be able to clarify some things with each other. maybe we should try the group thing once again and see if can work to our advantage ;)

my teacher does let us review our tests, i have an appointment this afternoon actually to see and get explanations on the questions that i missed. it really does help too.:specs:

i have made up my mind that i will get out of this class...i am not that far off from an 80...i will bust my butt...and do the best that i can.:D

keep up the hard work! i am in med-surg i also and i know all about the stress! on our last exam the class average was a 67.74.. talk about stressed! :banghead:

just don't give up and you will make that 80% you are striving for! :)
