Feel Guilty for Leaving My Co-workers - Traveling

Hello Nurse Beth,

I have been working in the ICU of a local hospital for the past two years, nurse for 4. My hospital, like most hospitals in my state, has the nurses work without CNA, lift team has been taken away, no more IV team, communication lacking, procedures changing daily or just being ignored (such as timeouts). The list is long. I am burned out. I feel tired, disrespected. I want to try the traveling gig in Washington state. I don't know if I should leave the comfort of my routine and the security of my current job, but I really want to. I realize that my situation isn't unique. We're all burned out. I am thinking about quitting in the Spring, once I buy a used RV and get my first contract. I do feel guilty about leaving the other nurses behind and I am not sure if I am making the right decision.

Dear Feels Guilty,

You have no reason to feel guilty and guilt is not a good basis for decision-making. Think about what's good for you and what you need. If a colleague came to you with this same question and situation and feelings, what would you say to her? You'd probably tell her to pack up and have a wonderful time. So be as good to yourself.

When you're burned out it's time to make a change. You have the requisite experience. Taking a travel job could be the best thing for you right now.

It's not because travel jobs necessarily have any better working conditions than what you're experiencing now, but the difference is that you're in control.  The pay is good to great, and you'll have an adventure.

Do your due diligence and get a good contract. There's a great facebook group called Travel Nurse network where you can learn from others, and avoid poor locations.

Best wishes with your decision,

Nurse Beth
