Nursing Students General Students

A month ago I stood with pre-nursing students still in their pre-reqs and watched as many nursing students walked by in their scrubs.
A particularly outspoken woman said, very loudly, that she could not believe how "fat" our nursing students are, and how ironic and awful it was.
Her point was that an overweight person can not make a good nurse, as it is his/her job in the first place to teach and advocate a healthy lifestyle, and so on.
This comment still bothers me a month later.
Though I am not really overweight myself, there are plenty of great people in my life who are. Family, friends, classmates. I think nothing of it. I do not see how being "fat" as she so blunty put it could make someone "bad" in the medical field.
Nursing is about heart and compassion. Maybe if she had either of those she would be past the pre-reqs she kept failing at and actually be admitted into our program? :icon_roll
I just thought I would share this story with you all, see if you have any opinions. I still feel bitter about it! I take great pride in nursing and NURSES. All shapes, all sizes. We each have something unique to offer the field.

This lady proves what I was told many years ago: Ignorance is the root of prejudice.

Here's the link to an older thread on "unhealthy medical professionals." Please click on the link to read the varied responses to this issue. It would be a crying shame if we reopened such a controversial, ugly subject that has the tendency to turn heated.
Good luck to you!
