Hi All,
I'm a pre-nursing student..starting nursing school Fall '09! I'm in Anatomy now and we just finished up the nervous system and moving along to the brain. I am FASCINATED with neuro! Who would have thunk it?
I was always interested in working with children..as well as possibly in ICU..but now..I don't know! That's the great part of nursing..always many areas to go to.
So my question is..what attracted you to neuro? Did you start there or did you eventually fall there? What are some of your typical days (or nights) like?
What do you like most...least?
Any advice for a soon-to-be nursing student?
My school actually does a clinical in ICU..so I can't wait!!
Thanks!

Well I am glad you love neuro as a pre nursing student!!! I picked neuro because it is the system I knew least about (I am truthful), I felt you never have two patients with the same type of stroke that are similar and it is developing field.
The part with neuro is families (it is scary knowing that an injury could change the persons personality and there is a possibility of them never being the same) and when you can't reason with patients due to their injuries.
I would recommend doin gsome CNA work in neuro or a rehab and see what it is like as a CNA. There is a book called stroke of insight and it explained a neuro antatomist with an AVM hemmorhage in the left side and explains her recovery. It is fasinating and a very easy read
Good luck any more questions feel free to post or PM me

Wow..great! Thanks for your quick and informative response. I should add that since my father has Parkinson's Disease (he was diagnosed almost 2 years ago)..that might also fuel my interest..
But, I will DEFINITELY pick up the book! As well as PM you as well! :)

Nothin better than a confused neuro patient who's fighting and trying to climb out of bed with drains and wires in their heads/brains. Fun. Love that.
Hope you keep your enthusiasm!
Great..love it!
So..what are some of the downsides of neuro..I know there has to be some! Do you generally find nurses interested in the field..or it it hard to keep them enthused?
