One of my family memebers (SIL) who is a Radiology Tech. is so jealous of me going to RN school. I will be graduating in May/June of this year. Any time I am around her she talks about how much she makes and how hard it is to be an RN. She makes me feel like RN's are so much LOWER than a Rad Tech. First of all I don't really care and try to look at it that way, but gosh she throws SOMETHING in my face every time I see her. ANNOYING . .How much do Radiology Techs REALLY make in a "small town" hospital? compared to a NEW grad RN? I know new grads where I will be start at $21.85 base. . . . .. How do you deal with Jealous people?:icon_roll

I would just do my best to ignore her, don't get sucked in to her competition with you. It takes a whole team to take care of patients and it sounds like she may not realize that. Hopefully at some point she will realize that she is wasting her time and give up. At least for your sake I hope she does. Congrats on the upcoming graduation, don't let her get you down.

I have a sister in law like that, too. She's a dental hygienist, and is constantly trying to one-up me. The first time I told her I was in nursing school, she made it a point to tell me that her dental hygiene program was much more difficult than the nursing program at her school. I just smiled and nodded. Don't let it get to you, there will always be people around trying to make themselves feel better by tearing others down. Also, if you're really curious about what she makes, check salary.com...you can enter a job title and zip code, and it'll give you the average salary for your area :loveya:

I was curious so I looked up the salaries for a rad tech vs a rn in my area on salary.com. The two come up with very similar salaries (RNs only averaging about $2K more).
As others have said, just ignore her comments. Obviously she is the one insecure about her job choice and she really shouldn't be! If you are happy with what you are doing, why would you be jealous of what someone else does? For me, I love the fact that becoming an RN leads to so many opportunities in the future should I ever decide I want to continue my education. I can't imagine your SIL or a dental hygienist has quite the same opportunity, but if they love what they do then it shouldn't matter! And it's hard to be jealous when you are happy. Sounds like your SIL is trying to convince herself that her job is better than what yours will be, but that's just silly. Neither one is as long as you are satisfied with where you are.

This is exactly what I wanted to say at the end of my post. You put it perfectly

I am a Rad Tech in nursing school. I made $18.65 an hour at a orthopedic clinic. Now I am working 12 hr shifts Fri, Sat, Sun at a walk in clinic as a rad tech/medical assistant, I make $14 an hour, which is insulting but it is 5 minutes from my house, they work around my school schedule, and if we are slow I am allowed to study.
In my area (Kentucky) Rad Techs and RN's make similar salaries, with less than $2 an hour difference. That is for staff techs, CT/MRI techs make much more. One of the local hospitals was recently offering $33 an hour to work 7p-7a on the weekends. I was tempted to forget nursing school and go back to get my MRI certification but I hate taking Xrays, and I would probably hate MRI's.
P.S. nursing school is 100x harder than Radiology classes ever where. Don't worry about her, she jealous.

wow there must be something about family rivalry... my step sister is an ultrasound tech... she always had this weird tendancy of getting the same things as me (example being the same car!) The same week I started nursing school, she called and asked for my NET book because she wanted to apply to nursing school!
personally i think its funny.. it really makes those people look like fools for always trying to one-up everyone
