Failed First Semester

Published

Hi Everyone,

I feel comfortable saying this here but I just failed fundamentals. I was extremely close to passing with a 75% but I missed by a few questions. I have never failed a college course before until nursing school. First semester was incredibly rough for me. I have another opportunity to retake the class which I plan on doing for fall 2022 to achieve a better grade. I know I can do it because I have the passion and drive to become a nurse but failing a nursing class makes me a failure. Has anyone failed a nursing class before? ?

You will find that AN receives postings about nursing students and failing courses every May and December (always by a few points). You are not alone, but you need to figure out what you can do differently. You have time now to investigate study skills, test taking skills and how to deal with test anxiety.

Is there a lot of writing involved? I am so terrified cuz I am bad at writing

This is a little late but I wanted to share because this spoke to me. I was a mostly A's and some B's college student until I got to nursing school LOL, I failed and had to retake pharm and failed and had to retake maternity. I was dealing with a lot and I felt like a failure and wasn't sure if I was going to graduate. My professors and program worked with me (luckily) and I was able to pass both classes and now I'm about to start work in a level 1 trauma ER as a new grad ? you were so close and your determination will pay off! So proud of you for pushing through. It is one of the hardest majors because of the pressure, clinicals, and grade requirements. You've got a good semester ahead of you and if you're having problems, make sure to reach out to people early and dedicate extra time to things that you're struggling with. It's hard, but sometimes it will have to take priority over social things. One day you'll look back at the experience and appreciate the hard times and how you were able to get through them. Experiencing tough situations will help you as a nurse and when you're taking care of patients in the future. Good luck and make sure you hype yourself up!!

I have a Bachelor's, a Master's  and more than enough collegiate credits to qualify as a Doctorate. I have taught Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Biology and all sorts of science courses on top of all that.  I am a second career nurse.   NURSING school for my ADN has been the most challenging courses and tests I have ever had out of the hundreds of college credits I have ever had.    It's not easy and I often wonder why the heck any RN at any level doesn't have a higher level of credits.  It is hard but not impossible.  Live, Eat, Sleep Nursing and you will make it.  You got this!
