I just got a bachelor degree in science and I am planning to apply for ABSN in St. Louis University as well as other Universities. The program will start in 2016 if I got in. I wonder is there anything I could do to make my application better, like work or gain some experience in nursing? I have a one free year which I will do some prerequisite courses and some volunteer in a hospital. However, I still have lot of free time. I would like your suggestion about what activity should I do to improve my chance for getting into the program?
Thanks :)

Volunteer experience is limited to administrative functions due to rigorous patient privacy regulations. You may be allowed to transport patients in a wheelchair, but it's unlikely that you will do anything remotely 'clinical'. It does provide an opportunity to become familiar with the routines & rhythms of healthcare work.
You could always look for an inexpensive CNA course. Some publically funded programs are as quick as 6 weeks in length & fairly inexpensive. This would provide you with an opportunity to actually participate in patient care.
Make sure you have a "Plan B" if you are not accepted into the program you want. There is still an enormous level of competition for very limited nursing education slots in many areas of the country.

There are plenty of places that hire techs without being a cna. I could name a few of them in the St. Louis region.

Thank you. I tried to apply for a job but because I don't have US working vise, it kindda hard for that. I am currently in Canada and most jobs in hospital they required a certain degree. but yea. i will search about it. thank you so much
