Expunged Record TXBON

Published

I just got accepted into nursing school and will soon be doing fingerprints. In 2018, I got a misdemeanor for theft and got it expunged in 2022. I had to do a pretrial diversion program and community service hours.
I'm not sure on whether to disclose it before or after I get the results for my fingerprints. I don't want the process to take longer. I'm just confused as to what to do.

Always be honest up front. If you are up front with them then if something comes up they aren't surprised. Even if something is expunged it doesn't mean all record systems actually have removed it, or that your licensing body may have some kind of access still.

If it's expunged, then you don't need to disclose it. Period. UNLESS it specifically says to list expunged cases, I never disclose mine. I only had to disclose it to the BRN and only because they asked.  I understand you want to be honest, but unless they ask for the info, don't give it.

True advice.

Expunged records can be uncovered during background checks for public safety jobs, including nursing. Even if your nursing school does not find this information, when you graduate and apply to take the NCLEX exam, an FBI-level background check will be conducted, and the record will be revealed.

It might feel like disclosing upfront could slow things down, but honesty tends to smooth out any potential issues, and the school or nursing board will likely appreciate your transparency.

You have more to lose by lying than by being honest.
