Experienced RN considering a change in specialty-need advice!

So today I had an interview for a very interesting job opportunity and I feel that I have a good chance of being offered the job. Basically, I would be an assistant for a neuropsychiatrist who is overseeing a clinical study on a medical device. It sounds like some admin, some quality control with making sure the trial is carried out according to plan, involving some minor travel, and an opportunity to assist in writing of protocols. It would be 9-5, M-F, no weekends, no holidays! Salary with benefits.

Sounds great...but not sure I am ready to give up my current job. As we all know, nursing jobs are hard to come by. I work nights (11-7) on a postpartum unit with excellent pay and benefits. For the most part, I like my job, except for the schedule. The new job would probably be a significant decrease in pay. I am also concerned if this study doesn't work out and the business goes under (it's a startup) what will I do for work. It's a big risk to take...

So, any opinions? Does this sound like too big a risk? For any nurses that have done research nursing, did you enjoy it? Does it open many doors for other opportunities? Thanks!

You could just change your status to per diem at you current job, then you would at least have your foot in the door if the new one doesn't pan out.

To the previous poster, I agree with your advice, but unfortunately, all the per diem positions are filled right now. I work at a union hospital, and they are not creating any new positions. In fact, there is talk about layoffs. I don't think my position is in jeopardy because I have good seniority, but if I leave, it's truly "Goodbye". That's why I am so hesitant. I do feel that this opportunity could open new doors for me, though....Just a lot to think about.

Clinical studies are often supported by grants. They generally have a finite ending, say 1-2 yrs. I would hesitate to leave solid footing for such an interesting but possibly short-term job.

I left hospital nursing and took a couple years off then did clinical research for 10 yrs. It was a nice change of pace. Pay was good in hospital based research and poor in physician practice research. I recently got layed off from my research job. I had a really hard time finding a hospital job because I had been out of it so long. Luckily one hospital took a chance on me. I would advise a nurse to keep her foot in the door.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It seems like you are all confirming my gut feeling not to go for it. I think if the economy were different I might, but it is just too scary right now. The right schedule will hopefully come along someday....Anyways, I think the choice will be even easier if they offer me in salary what I think they will offer. That's interesting that hospital based research pays more, good info for future opportunities. Thanks again!
