Experience reentering field after extended leave

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am an RN who has been inactive for 12 years raising my children. I'd like to re-enter the field, maybe in a hospital, I haven't decided yet! I have 7 years ICU experience plus a couple years of general med-surg. Unfortunately I have to take my boards again in Pennsyvania to reactivate my license since I let it lapse and haven't practiced in over 5 years. A board certified refresher course just isn't practical at this time for me to reactivate my license so I will take the boards to get my license back and then pursue a refresher course somewhere. Most board certified refresher courses I have reviewed have 120 hours of clinical in them and I just don't feel I need that much clinical, not to mention the fact I just can't do it with my 4 kids and my husband's work schedule. I eventually want to work part time, I'm thinking of getting my school nurse certification, they are really hurting for substitute school nurses around here and I think I would enjoy it. I'd love to hear from anyone who has gone back to nursing after being out a while and what your experience has been. Thanks alot!

Cindy :)
