i was in a job fair in san diego last week. nobody was interested in the new grads.---sad. One rep from a subacute hospital asked me" are you a new grad?" I said No. I was surprised with what she said, "good!!" I guess all she was getting were new grads. i feel so bad for the new grads. I have almost 5 years experience mostly in critical care, only one has called me back in almost 2 months now..It's crazy! I have to move to SD soon..
What I can suggest is you relocate to where it's easy to get a job. most will even train you in specialty units. they'l pay you crap to start with, but after a year or 2, you can leave and move back. I know relocating, for some, is not an option. But for some, it may be the only option.
Im here in florida.. Im sure you'll get a job in a heartbeat! good luck to all of us looking for a job!
Very discouraging -- especially in the Bay Area. Makes me angry when they very same hospital who's claims they are hiring on the above allnurses.com banner as I type this repeatedly slams the door on new grad RN's (many in my class who are excellent students and employees of the very same hospital).
It seems to be all about who you know, if you are the right age, right GPA (we all had to be rocking students to even get into my nursing school), if you are the preferred sex, if you have a very vocal preceptor, etc. All the ducks need to line up and too bad for you if you don't know anybody on the inside.
I feel so bad putting my family thru such stress and financial hardship to have no light at the end of the tunnel. I can not move my kids and husband, yet this very same hospital above hired someone out of state...grrrrr. One of the young 20 year olds hired was a notorious student more interested in parties and could not even make it into my nursing school and had to go to a private school. Travlers continue to be overused. The media continues to harp on a non existent nursing shortage. WHAT? Not here?
And lets not even talk about all the smack talk from people who say things like "if you can't get hired in a nursing shortage maybe you arent cut out to be a nurse?" Seriously, I am so eager and ready to work and I know I will make a wonderful nurse just given the chance.
Sorry for the rant.
I graduated back in May 09..I tried all the major hospitals in Orange County, none gave an opportunity. I just got hired at a small community hospital in LA county last month. its quite a drive, but I cant be picky.
If it wasnt for my uncle's friend at church who has friends in the administrative department, I would still be stuck looking. Good luck my fellow new grads.
It is a tough world out there right now.
There is no Nursing shortage anymore....my opinion anyway.
