Experience for FNP

This may have been posted before but I am just looking for some advice. I am looking into NP programs and I have my BSN now. I originally applied for Acute Adult-Gerontology NP program but after talking to some more experienced nurses I was told to go for Family NP so I will have less limitations in the future. When speaking to the advisor at Drexel she said the FNP program is very competitive and requires at least a year of Med/Surg experience. I worked in pediatric home care for 3 years, special needs school nurse for one year and now I've been working at a dialysis clinic for one year. Her response was not very encouraging so now I am second guessing myself. Any advice I would greatly appreciate because now I am feeling a little lost. Thank you:smug:

A couple of thoughts. What are your reasons for going back to NP school? FNP and Acute care are pretty different from each other, so you might want to do a little more self-reflection rather than base your choice on other's opinions about job options. FNP is quite a saturated specialty and jobs can be hard to come by. Drexel is a great school, but there are also tons of amazing schools that will accept you without Med-Surg experience! For an FNP that is. I think you will be hard pressed to find a reputable Acute Care program that accepts you without any acute care experience. Would you be willing to get some experience in a hospital first before applying?
