Experience ~ Charleston/MUSC

Published

I will be applying to CRNA schools this fall, and would really like to get into the program in Charleston, SC. The program requires 2 years of experience, I will only have a little over a year when I start the program....does anyone know how necessary the 2 year requirement is? (Or if by any chance they would accept me and let me complete the two years with a sure acceptance?)

Thanks in advance!

I was very impressed with what I was able to find out about MUSC. I had wanted to apply there but was told that they will not accept or interview anyone unless they have completed two years of ICU experience by their application deadline, not the start of their program. Check with them to see, however last time I checked which was last fall, they would not waive this requirement. Good luck.

Thanks for your response ~ it doesn't sound too promising, but I will contact them as you suggested.

What impressed you about them? Just curious, as I am thinking of applying there in a couple of years, along with a few other schools.

Thanks in advance.

I have emailed them a couple of times. The guy that I talked to told me that they didn't even consider anyone with less than 3yrs experience in the last class they accepted. I can't remember his name but he was on the selection committee. Since I live in SC that is obviously one of my top choices.

With the new program director taking over in June, the length of experience may change. :)

I'm currently a Newman student. Our program director is leaving to become the new director of the SC program. He is very student oriented and easy to visit with. I would suggest calling him after he takes over the program this summer and asking him this question. He WILL be honest with you.

I didn't know that they were changing program directors. That could all very well possibly change. I would do as the others say and give them a call about preferences.

I am in the process of applying to various programs, and am curious as to whether anyone knows if MUSC has altered their 2-year experience requirement?

Thanks,

Peter

Sorry but I do not know and I just started the program 2 days ago. There is a TOTALLY new administration from before. Apparently they will be changing the website sometime soon so maybe any new requirements will go up then. The new director is the former director from Newman university in Kansas as of this past July. You might want to check those entrance requirements. Then again, one would have to assume that they won't change the entrance requirements in the middle of the application process and any changes would go into effect after this Nov 30th.

Actually, I was told a few years ago that they did not even look at applications from those with less than 3 years experience. That proved to be a false statement. Actually, they have admitted people with a little over a year of experience. I have spoken to several people currently in the program who are a little unhappy with the change in administration. Make sure you thoroughly research programs and try to talk to current students before applying.

are in,

Actually everything in your post regarding the admissions process is COMPLETELY irrelevant due to the new administration revamping the process. Furthermore, it was irresponsible of you to post on the internet that people are unhappy with the new administration for these reasons:

A. Of course there will be some unhappy students in the class that started with one group of professors and had them all suddenly replaced. I for one know first hand that most of them ARE happy but will admit that the transition was stressfull to them.

B. The new students, including myself have been to class for 3 days, none of which included lectures or tests by the new director (that starts next week)so any unhappy comments from my class would be completely unfounded.

Yes, it is a good idea to talk to students before you apply but you should also validate and analyze the credibility of the information you receive before you post it on the internet.
