expecting too much and only frustrating well yourself

Published

Okay.. so I sat here at head start working and only getting myself frustrated.. as I send out reminders for physicals, lead screening, and vaccinations that are due/ overdue... that I would like to have for their files (keeping them up to date). Early head start has home visitors..I have written the parents the 11 well child checks that are expected and they can either grab the from from the office or from their home visitor. Well one home visitor does not even carry any extra forms because they get enough and she does not know how to help them short of meeting them at the appointment ( stupid) or getting a release and getting it faxed over( I am trying to stop doing .. we always do that). then she explained that doctors only pay for one a year... ummm. I am so confused.. I just wish parents would take some responsibility and be proactive.. drives me crazy.. I care about your kid and you.. although it may not seem like at times.. especially when I chose not to send one when home when what I thought were bug bits.. got him sent home yesterday.. i feel bad but I feel undermined now.. the teacher spoke with the administrator ( I know has more pull) on a day I was not there.. teacher had come to me before and apparently not been happy with my decision.... Venting... thanks

I am not sure how things work in a head start or in your state, but generally things like vaccines and physicals are mandatory and give you the teeth to say if this isn't done by XX date your child will be excluded from school until compliance is met. Your local health dept can get behind you if your administration is iffy about it. Once you start bringing the hammer down things start flowing a bit smoother. I try to not let kids start without full compliance if i can

my biggest problem is home based where they dont have to have everything on file .. which I am trying to get them to understand that if i have everything on file and you decide to go center at any point then no problem.. I have what we all need and you are set... it not hard to take a paper with you ... have the doctor fill it out and then give it to your home teacher... rather they would prefer to get a release of information and have you ask for them to fill it out afterward.. i think is insane

The program I worked for made it uniform across the board, health forms for center based and home based due dates the same. Home based kids could not attend the monthly group outings unless all paper work was current. Parents seems to get it together after their child was excluded from some fun activity, group trips, field trips.

That is what I am trying to do...is to make it uniform..yesterday the home visitor asked if I was stressing about the physical..sorta...I want them...she said cuz it's always been like that..not anymore. that is a good idea to exclude from activities.

Remember, you're the new sheriff in town. Do things your way. Give a date for compliance before heads will roll... er... students will be excluded - or kept from activities or whatever leverage you can use - but use it. Some people will continue to do nothing without some sort of threat. Makes me wonder in the utility companies constantly are banging at their door threatening to cut services to them
