Excelsior Scam?

Published

i signed up for excelsior college, and got a loan through jena mae. the thing is, i hated it. i took two of the exams did great on one of them and ok on the other. i just didnt feel like it was the right program for me. however they are making my pay $100 every month for 48 months and i am not even getting anything from them! i think it is such a scam because any other school, you pay as you go and they return some of your money if you dont complete a course. does anyone have a similiar story or know how i can get out of paying this? they only give you three days after signing for the loan to back out, and how can anyone possibly know after three days if something is going to workout for them? thanks for letting me vent.

I too went through DLSI, but I did my homework first. I have pages and pages of emails with questions I sent to DLSI, and their replies. Joe, the person I communicated with, was very up front, informative, and knew his stuff, and fully explained everything. Unfortunately, he is no longer with DLSI. Even with his departure, all of my questions to DLSI have been answered to my satisfaction. Would I go through DLSI again? Probably not. There are much cheaper alternatives. Am I sorry I went through DLSI? No. I am guaranteed to pass these exams with their material (albeit, I would have to fail twice to get any further assistance.) For the most part, their material is very good. I did have some issues with their Microbiology guide, but the rest are pretty good. Its too bad you didn't explore a little more before signing on the dotted line. The only thing I can suggest is that you request all of the study guides you paid for, then try and re-sell them on ebay etc. You might just re-coup a bit off your money. They are YOUR study guides, as you have already paid for them....its worth a try.

What were your problems with micro? I am trying to study for that test myself. Thanks..

My issues were with the DLSI Study guide for Microbiology. Just plain sloppiness in some areas....wrong page references to the text book, incorrect answers to some questions in the practice exams, typo's, grammatical and spelling errors, conflicting information. This is definitely the worst of the study guides, I even went as far as to keep bugging DLSI until someone listened to my complaints about the study guide. I doubt if anything has been done about it though. For the most part their guides are satisfactory and get the job done. Just be warned that for the microbi guide, you'll have to do some research and digging on your own...especially to find the proper text referenced pages. Oh, I just received a refund from DLSI for a course they said I needed to take which I paid for, that Excelsior said I didn't need. It took three months for the refund, and then it was $35 less than I paid for the course. I am looking into this at the moment. I better get my full refund, as it was DLSI's fault, not mine. I have been disappointed lately in their management (DLSI's). I will email you the changes for the first few chapters...page numbers, etc.

I did get the complete refund from DLSI for the course I didn't need to take. I called, then emailed them with the problem, and it was corrected quickly. Except for the Microbi, I have been satisfied with them. Costly, yes, but when you work f/t, spare time is a precious commodity, and I found the study guides saved me a lot of time. Like I said earlier though, you have to balance out cost vs. benefits. For me, it was worth it. Others may not find it so. What ever gets you that passing grade!

Hi

i'm just reading this conversation about dlsi, i'm a recent student with them and i must say i wish i had read these comments before hand , because they are scaming people in a legal way . When i attended the simanar the speaker was ben and he failed to mention alot of things ,the main thing is that you don't really need this service , it's a expensive lesson to learn. And i'm sooo sorry i ever answered their flier.now i'm stuck

Hi,

My 2 cents. Your problem isn't with the school. U did what a few ppl have done and are learning from a very expensive mistake, u signed up with an external publishing company that finances the costs of the program and study materials but is in no way shape or form affiliated with the college itself. As a current student, i can tell u I had made the same mistake and signed up with the college network, one of the many publishing companies. Later, i realised it was better to go directly with the college, where u pay for the exams as u go. U are able to take two courses before enrolling, and the total amount u spend by the end of the program is never anywhere near what u spend signing up with these ppl. I'm sorry to say but Excelsior themselves will not be able to help u resolve that matter with Jena Mae. I would suggest u figure out a way to stop these monthly payments.

Excelsior's website is Excelsior College - excelsior.edu all the info u need about the program directly from the horse's mouth can be found there.

Best of luck
